When a character with certain design becomes popular, people start repeating the same thing. Now we have a character design that representes certain personality. In anime this is very common, and you know that the character with twintails is a tsundere, or the character is short blue hair is emotionless etc.

If you want to see an example of putting the literal creator into a series right, watch old school anime Excel Saga. The anime creator (top) put himself in as an absurd Lupin character and the manga creator (bottom) is just some strange faced weirdo in series, continually saying he approves. Makes for good cosplays, too.
