Staus quo is a tool; one with flaws and features that don't always balance.
Personally, I don't like it. I think it undermines potential for development and leaves certain conflicts on perpetual repeat or unresolved in really unsatisfying ways. Nothing hurts quite like seeing a lesson learned being horribly undone so everything can be rest.

Status Quo ultimately isn't good or bad.
For instance look at Ultimate Universe which took advantage of the lack of a true status quo, people praised it for the ability to actually evolve past a comfort zone, however it all went to shit when the reigns were given to a hack.
But really it just shows the issues of never ending stories passed off to writers of varying but typically mediocre quality.
