Would DC/Marvel be better if status quo wasn't a thing?

Comics couldn't possibly get any worse than they are now, so yes.

Early 90s Avengers is so weird.

Just look at the cartoons from the big two. Even the most hilariously cheesy ones from the 80s are better in the long run compared to what comics have done with their connected history.

Aww, look at Shulkie being supportive of the repeat offender trying to turn his life around.

And I think Status Quo should be around for a little while just so it can be changed later. That way we get some time to explore more aspects of a character and their dynamic with the world as it currently is. If your life is constantly changing I don't think change would mean as much to you.
Status quo as 'it is like this, it has always been like this, it will always be like this' can work for a static character who doesn't grow much, but it's not really a good way to keep EVERY story going.

Making Sandman evil and thus a villain again via "Magic brainwashing" was complete bullshit, fuck marvel and the hacks they employ.

Except 80s cartoons were all about the status quo, dingus.

I knew that Sandman was a good guy for a while but then started committing crimes again. But I always assumed he at least had a sympathetic reason for that. Was it literally just that he became brainwashed and then never got un-brainwashed?

No.

M-maybe that's what he meant? There's not enough status quo nowadays.

Not necessarily. But it would be nice if the good ideas lasted longer.

yup the Wizard kidnapped him and turned him evil again, with no one ever finding out about that either to my knowledge

would be fun if they had the Avengers find out about that and undo the brainwashing someday

Rage in MCU when?

>Superfriends and Ruby Spears Supes
>Status quo
Really nigga? If anything the 80s were the whole "gotta appeal to the kids" shit. Remember Popeye and son?

Thanks to the MCU, we're about to find out.

JLA would be a further extension of the early 90s series with people like Bloodwynd, Maxima, Guy with whatever powers that week, etc.

Or they might just keep the legacy character thing going. By now Wally, Kyle, and Connor might have passed the torch on to some new group all over again.

DC throws in a crisis every once in a while to keep things interesting

The second Avenger lineup was made up of Cap and three ex villains. They were not about to get pissy about Sandman that much later on.

>DC throws in a crisis every once in a while to make some sweet, sweet event money

yes they do

YES.

Getting rid of status quo is a double edged sword. It rewards ongoing readership and allows characters to have a beginning, middle and end to their life stories but also creates the issue of minor continuity lockout. As the setting and characters evolve, the room for new creators and audiences diminishes.
Decades of continuity without a general status quo to adhere to alienates everyone but the original creators and fans.

Keeping a status quo requires more and more bullshit over time and puts a ceiling on creative potential on a story by story basis. It permanently suspends or resets arcs that would be much more satisfying to end than perpetuate but cannot be resolved. There are fewer satisfying endings and logical issues like why certain super geniuses haven't completely transformed the world or made a legitimate career become harder to hand wave.
PART I

Staus quo is a tool; one with flaws and features that don't always balance.
Personally, I don't like it. I think it undermines potential for development and leaves certain conflicts on perpetual repeat or unresolved in really unsatisfying ways. Nothing hurts quite like seeing a lesson learned being horribly undone so everything can be rest.
PART II

Status Quo ultimately isn't good or bad.
For instance look at Ultimate Universe which took advantage of the lack of a true status quo, people praised it for the ability to actually evolve past a comfort zone, however it all went to shit when the reigns were given to a hack.
But really it just shows the issues of never ending stories passed off to writers of varying but typically mediocre quality.

unironically my favorite era
