Pretty much everywhere but the US the duck comics are huge and have been for ages and Don Rosa is probably the most popular of them all.
Reprints of his stories are at least 2-3x as expensive as the regular duck comics.

Duck comics are about as important to Japanese comics as Bambi eyes are.

Duck comics were big in Japan because American soldiers brought them there during WWII. They started copying them (including Tezuka) and then developing their own manga style.

Tokyo Disneyland built an entire Junior Woodchucks Summer Camp restaurant a couple of years ago and you have stuff in DisneySea like the Scrooge McDuck department store or that "Romeo and Juliet, but with Disney Ducks" shop that has a huge mural of characters from Duck Comics and Cartoons

Most of them are short 10-page comedy stories, some of them are a bit longer adventure stories. Usually there's no continuity and you can read them in any order you want. The vast majority of duck comics are not particularly memorable. There are a few creators who are better than others, though.

Carl Barks is notable for creating nearly all the characters aside from Donald and the triplets. He was a very prolific writer/artist, and his works influenced tons of people who were reading comics back when he was still alive.

Don Rosa is the guy we always keep recommending because his stories had a lot of attention to their art, writing and research, and he was focused on building a continuity and a timeline for his works. His stories had tons of funny moments and a couple of intense emotional gut punches too. You're missing out if you haven't read "Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck".

The show isn’t really all that, with the best of it just imitating the kinds of stories that Barks and other comic writers, including him, wrote, but with one of the most central characters being replaced with a bunch of shallow and forced side characters. Some people see them as appealing characters and believe their purposefully cute and funny designs can be exploited to make them more sympathetic and therefore a rich storytelling device for any genre. Some people can't suspend their disbelief and the fact they're supossed to be feeling for cute, funny looking characters, either because they see it as childish/ridiculous, or they just find more serious art/themes relatable. If you're open minded, it's easier to accept the Duck's appearences and "play along", and you're usually rewarded with a both a fun and informative story that has meaningful themes. If you're closed minded and hard set that big eyed, stubby creatures can't have the same level of character complexity of human characters, then you're necessarily going to think anything with Donald Duck is just sandbox play in the grand world of Graphics Literature, no matter how serious or complex it tries to be. It really just boils down to your taste and how seriously you take yourself and the world. Even if you perfer more "realistic" design work, you can at least accept the acheivements and potentiality of cartoons, and that they can be something other than funny and obnoxious.
