I know it's popular, particularly on Yea Forums, to hate on Kevin Smith, but I'm actually really happy he survived that heart attack and lost all the weight. He seems like a really great guy that genuinely reads enjoys comics with a level of enthusiam I wish I had sometimes, in spite of the fact that he's written some really bad ones.
On that note, are there any actually decent comics Kevin Smith wrote? It's easy to list all the bad he did, but has he ever done any good with the comics he's written?
I liked his Green Arrow. It's practically a corner stone in any recommended reading list.
John Cruz
The only comic of his I've enjoyed was Chasing Dogma, and that's really only if you're a fan of early View Askewniverse. His writing has gone super downhill since Rogen introduced him to weed and his bad ideas were egged on by his podcast listeners.
Dominic Rivera
I wish he had finished Widening Gyre. I wasn't all that offended by the Year One callback and the out-of-character behavior of Bruce I think was somewhat excused by the fact that it was supposed to be the final Batman store pre-nu52.
Nathan Morris
>I'm actually really happy he survived that heart attack
so he'll have another one, OP?
Levi Gray
Best thing he ever wrote and it is not Grell or O'Neil level but it is great
Sebastian Perez
I don't hate Kevin Smith, I just don't want him to touch Batman or Spider-Man ever again.
Leo Morales
>wanting King over Smith
Ryan Russell
Why does he do that in every picture he's in? It's like his own personal version of basedface.
James Green
Kev's a nice guy, just wish he'd collect himself. I have no problem with dude's crying, but at the drop of a hat with him. Also his Daredevil was neat
Isaiah Gonzalez
He ruined cinemasins
Connor Miller
>implying cinemasins was ever good get your shit taste out of here
Josiah Wilson
Kevin Smith living room ten years off MovieBob’s life, so this was an overall win for everyone.
As far as Kevin Smith Yea Forums recommendations, I can’t think of any comics, but the Clerks animated series is still a gem.
Michael Morgan
That comic was terrible in every single aspect. If he's gonna write stoner fanfic level shit, the least he could do is to keep his awful artist friend the fuck away from the comics so at least you could enjoy the art.
I only read a few of comics by him. One was about Black Cat's secret origin as a rape victim. One had Nightcrawler going into detail about the Nazi persecution of the mutants. One was a Batman comic where Joker says he 'bottoms from the top'. And then I've of course seen the panel suggesting Batman pissed himself. So fair to say I don't have a high opinion of him as a comic writer. His movies have been a mixed bag too. I obviously don't wish him any harm, and I'm glad he didn't die, but it wasn't exactly surprising that he had heart trouble given his obesity. He's probably a nice enough guy but I'm not that impressed by anything he's done.
Josiah Fisher
He gets Ollie, and I hear good things about his Green Hornet series
Matthew Garcia
I'm sorry he called you out about CityWalk, bro.
Camden Ross
As a kid I remember loving his Daredevil comic with the anti-christ baby. It was on sale a few years ago so I bought the entire series...
Kid me had shit taste! It's been so long but i remember Daredevil throwing a baby off a roof and blocked everything else about it.
Ethan Johnson
Maybe he'll have a debilitating stroke, God willing.
Jonathan Campbell
Not if God has seen Dogma.
Anthony Thompson
You actually thought Cinema Sins was good to begin with?
Elijah Carter
Wydening Gyre was alright, would have been better if he had finished it.
I want him to write Nightwing, he really seemed to have a handle on Dick in the opening pages while the Quick Stop was getting shot up.
Carson Gray
I wish he'd stop putting his awful daughter and her friends in things.
The guy doesn't have a lot of skill, but yeah, I think he makes up for it with his genuine love and positivity.
I once send him a tweet "Keep up the adequate work", which he liked, which kinda shows what kind of person he is.
Connor Cox
I reserve a certain amount of respect for hacks that are sort of aware they're hacks but don't pretend to be more than what they are. While I didn't enjoy Yoga Hosers, Tusk, or most of the comics he's done, Kevin Smith at least seems motivated by an earnest love of comics and pulp horror. The dude has got plenty of money now, so this isn't a matter of cranking out trash to pay his bills. If there's at least some passion and effort on display in a work (which I'd say is present in those two films even if it's misguided), I can't bring myself to hate it. A film or comic only warrants hatred if it's completely mercenary, soulless, and there's no desire to engage with the audience.
Like, if you want to talk about stuff that is genuinely horrible in that way, there are plenty of better examples than Kevin Smith's output. For instance, "Doomsday Clock" is DC cynically exploiting a beloved old property to make a quick buck and it shows in how it's just complete trash. There are also lots of webcomics that embody the same failing, such as Assigned Male, post-2011 Sinfest, Least I Could Do, Better Days, Hathor the Cow Goddess, Natty, Stonetoss, and whatever Andrew Dobson's comic is called. In particular, works that prioritize being didactic over engaging with the audience automatically fail as entertainment, like some of the comics I just mentioned.
Smith was the first to put Stan Lee in his movie as a cameo. So it's really nice to see that come full circle with Lee's cameo in Captain Marvel. Considering Stan was a good friend to Smith, I'm sure Kevin appreciates it.
Jaxon Foster
I like Kevin Smith but the fact that he never has a poor opinion of anything gets a bit annoying.
Luke Rivera
He made Clerks. That's good enough for me. Mallrats and Dogma weren't dogshit either and the animated series was based.
Jackson Wright
His best writing will always be his 90s-early 2000s movies. They capture a lost vibe and he made crazy characters feel like that odd guy you knew from class. He's never been able to capture that feeling even with comics because he spends too much time nerding and not enough creating. Think about Geoff Johns, divisive writer like Smith, huge fan before becoming a writer, but you can name Johns' works because he created something big and had a vision. Smith spent too much time trying to bring his vibe from movies to comics.
Charles Mitchell
>For instance, "Doomsday Clock" is DC cynically exploiting a beloved old property to make a quick buck and it shows in how it's just complete trash How quick they forget about before Watchmen.
Jeremiah Collins
Im still 1000% convinced that Natty is a parody of overly violent progressive webcomics.
Alexander Hill
>It's been so long but i remember Daredevil throwing a baby off a roof and blocked everything else about it. That’s not what happened but its so funny I wish it was.
Dominic Lewis
>Clerks. That's good enough for me. Mallrats and Dogm R.I.P clerk's At least Jay and Silent Bob are getting a remake. Which I am going to treat like their last movie, from how long it takes for Kevin Smith to do a movie
Of course they’ve forgotten. It’s forgettable as a silent fart.
Adam Scott
He likes hockey, that makes him OK in my book.
Alexander Jackson
why is he so obsessed with degrassi
Levi Moore
My ex hated Clerks and thought it was disgusting. Then again, her name is Caitlyn and I told her I tried to suck my own dick when THAT scene came on. I was successful. She bore witness to it.
Daniel Taylor
He's obsessed with everything Canada.
Josiah Sanchez
Well for one, it cheaper to shoot there
Two, hockey
Adrian Ramirez
Not OP, but hopefully yes.
Chase James
Kevin Smith just doesn't have it anymore, whatever it was that made him a good writer/director and made fun movies. That is over now. He just makes complete crap and then rants about nonsensical things online each day. Then he seems to take himself as an all knowing comic guru who must pass judgment on any new movie or show.
Josiah Davis
Smith does sort of come off as a successful Moviebob that has more of his shit together
Hunter Thomas
Clerks was my GF-worthy test for a long time. If she liked Clerks and Mallrats, she was worth getting serious with. When I found the one that liked Clerks, Mallrats, AND Dogma I married her.
Dominic Thompson
His early stuff was mostly his having fun with his friends. It was like recording playtime. But when he tried to transition over to mainstream movies and left his friends he could only make mediocre crap.
Aiden Young
Those i understand, but he's obsessed to the point of insanity.
Carter Gonzalez
He has a poor opinion of Bruce Willis.
Joseph King
It very well could be. The way the author acts on social media, combined with how he's kind of guarded about his private life, makes me wonder if this is indeed a joke. Considering that it's literally just the Mary Sue protagonist violently eviscerating people for disagreeing with her over and over like an assembly line, it's possible he's going for absurd humor by creating the most extreme, nonsensical polemical tracts imaginable.
Normally I'd rule out the "it was all a ruse" theory, but conidering that even something as convincing as Deagle Nation turned out to be real, a little webcomic about horrific political violence could just as well be satirical as well.
Smith said, “Last February, I almost died. So on the one year anniversary of my widow maker heart attack, as a celebration of life and a big ol’ F you to Death, my best friend and I will be rolling cameras on a sequel/remake/reboot of a movie we first made nearly twenty years ago! In Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back our herbal heroes found out Hollywood was making a movie based on them, so they journeyed out to Hollywood to stop it. But I’ve learned so much as a storyteller and have grown immensely as a filmmaker since then, so audiences can expect something completely different: In Jay & Silent Bob Reboot our herbal heroes find out Hollywood is making a reboot of the old movie that was based on them, so they journey out to Hollywood to stop it again. I offer my (literal) undying thanks to our amazing partners at Saban and Universal for making this dream come true and backing this cinematic silliness!”
Mewes said, “I’m tired of doing Shakespeare all the time so it’ll be nice to get back to playing Jay again. It may be 25 years since I first played the idiot man-child from Jersey but this time’s going to be the best because I’ve really grown into the role of idiot man-child in my old age.”

> thatkevinsmith SNOOGANS! Here’s a first look at @jayandsilentbobreboot, courtesy of our genius @dpronlevy and our master stills artist @kylebonokaplan. On this adventure, Silent Bob’s dressed pretty much the same as he’s been in #Dogma through #clerks2, but Jay’s outfit has changed a bit, including his Ranger Danger t-shirt designed by @captain_ribman (the artist who created my Fat Man logo). Years back when I was working on Clerks III, Ribman and I came up with a slew of Ranger Danger comic covers to flesh out the world of the flick and make it seem like Ranger Danger had been around as long as Superman and the Fantastic Four. When Clerks III went away, the artwork sat dormant on my laptop for years. But when Reboot started taking serious shape, I blew the dust off the Ranger Danger artwork and put it to work all over Brodie’s Secret Stash. But I saved the Dark Knight-ish Ranger Danger: Requiem shirt for Jay to wear throughout the flick because in the world of our movie, Ranger Danger: Requiem is a gritty, rebooted version of a childhood superhero fave. Today marks the end of Week One of filming, and what a wonderful week it’s been! We’ve already shot a fist fulla cameos and @JayMewes is CRUSHING his return to the role that made him famous! If

I love Mewes.

well, it's probably going to suck, but at least they sound like they're having fun getting to work on it
Jacob Martin
Does anyone really want to see late 40something Jay and Silent Bob pretend to be teens horribly timewarped here from the late 90s in another movie?
I bet Van den Beek will be glad to be in this one.
Nathaniel Brooks
Some people just have weird fucking smiles. I should know
Adrian Bennett
>40something Jay and Silent Bob I think that's the point. A lot of shows encapsulation the embodiment of teenagers. that loser you knew in highschool who would never be nothing. Unless they died or went to prison those burn out teenager would inevitable turn 40 and still be walking around
Random people better make fun of them for wearing totally 90s clothes
Chase Turner
Remember that time he appeared on one of those DC animated movies and started interviewing Beast Boy about his death girlfriend? Man, that was weird.
Tyler Hall
wut
Jonathan Bennett
>I hear good things about his Green Hornet series Both of his Green Hornet books were pretty good, though I personally favor his "Batman '66 Meets The Green Hornet" series over the one that adapted the script he wrote for Disney.
Nathaniel Williams
Kevin Smith is an okay-ish guy, honestly I'm not familiar with any of his films or comics and pretty much everything I know about him is from the earlier episodes of FMoBM. He doesn't strike me as a terrible person, but just a guy who is completely lacking in tastes and will gobble up anything that's out there and talk about it without much critical thinking about it. To put it simply: he's a fanboy. The FMoBM podcast was great because of the guests, not the host, that's why I listened to it so much.
