What makes someone a nerd Yea Forums?
What makes someone a nerd Yea Forums?
As far as a social status, the word has lost its meaning.
Nowadays, it's become synonymous with "enthusiast"
>nerds are ostracized
>nerds complain
>people stop making fun of nerds
>nerds complain
>pop culture now revolves around nerds
>nerds complain
You guys should be braces first in a toilet bowl right now.
I always associated with it being obsessed with something the general population would not be so.
It's not restricted to pop culture or education. Sports are usually considered manly or widely viewed but there are definite nerds who follow every aspect and do stats. Same with people who really know about guns or the composition of drugs despite them being viewed as non-nerd things
Being ugly
nerd is some one who actually delves into a subject to a point where its unhealthy.
it used to be harder to acquire and enjoy niche media but not everyone with access to the phone can become an RPG/comic/anime geek and everything's getting mongrelized for maximum profit
Nerd/=/Geek
This.
A nerd is someone who spends time studying instead of getting out. A geek is someone obsessed with a niche subject.
One way to tell them apart is that nerds are highly employable while geeks aren't.
>Sports fans
Which is ridiculous, because football, for example, is not a healthy sport or culture in anyway, especially for high schoolers. It induces brain damage, long term, and lays down a lifetime of shit diet. Not to mention that sports stadium food and hours of sitting down eating "game food" is an even worse ingrained habbit than most atrophied nerds. Take a look at football fans in general, they're often fat fucks with terrible habbits.
Back in the day geeks where the weird and outcast ones, nerds don't exist now because they are the not so weird type of people anymore...they are usually in a better job than your average geek.
Geeks now a days are the obnoxious mother fuckers with their funko and faggy tier collectibles from a wide variety of normal things from pop culture that are in fact "accepted" by your fellow "geeks"...so the answer for your question is: A nerd is someone who enjoys studying and a geek is someone well informed and lived in their favorite hobby or niche.
"EUUUAAAAGH HANDEGG SPORTBAWL EEEEEAAAAAAUUUGH. MY DADDY THINKS I'M GAY EUAAAAGH."
Nah, the OG nerds just hate having to deal with people that don’t actually share any interests with them.
It’s like how someone claims to looooove skub, but when you try to discuss the merits of skub, they just brush the conversation away.
>nerds are treated like trash
>nerds are accepted
>normalfags flood in because trends
>community becomes what the originals hated
FTFY
Shotguns for hands.
This almost could have come from someone with an informed opinion but the “shit diet” bit proves you bought into that blatant troll image from yuro/sp/. Sit down and shut up.
What some anons need to understand is that nobody is bullying you for your Yea Forums Yea Forums or Yea Forums hobbies. You get bullied because you’re an ugly, social retard, who doesn’t adhere to proper hygiene
But, that is what a nerd is. Ergo, they shouldn’t call themselves nerds if they don’t want to be with those kinds of people.
you need to have anti-social behavior as well as an obsessive personality when it comes to your hobbies. Your hobbies must be deeply rooted in mathematics, science or some form of escapism (like fantasy), as well as being very complex to understand and to get into.
tldr: you need autism
An obsessive interest in some unnecessary hobby.
Could be sports stuff like Fantasy Football, or game stuff like Chess or LeagueOfLegends, books like Discworld or Spider-Man, or even real life things like butterflies and dinosaur fossils.
Who cares? Serious question.
Nerds do.
Why do you skubfags always have to bring it into everything?
Being ostracized by your piers for your hobbies
Scene kids are not a thing. OP's pic is dated as fuck.
People who want their descriptors to be accurate.
You wouldn't call a goth kid a stoner unless ya knew he smoked pot.
being incel. incel is the new nerd.
being a fucking failure who constructs his identity around mass culture. Especially if he thinks he's "better" for having a more "authentic" interest in mass culture.
Being a total sperg who is socially isolated and most importantly doesn't identify themselves as a nard because they don't have the self awareness to do so.
People who are on the right but think they're on the left because they read a few Batman comics they bought at Barnes and Noble.
like the posers who say to have waifus but also real girlfriend or wife
This guy gets it.
>skub
but why do you want descriptors? have you given up on people getting to know the regular way so now you put on tags like you are some movie in a catalog?
You niggers complain but i am sure that 9 out of 10 you fags are normalfags who use social shit like facebook or twitter anyway
>nobody is bullying you for your Yea Forums Yea Forums or Yea Forums hobbies
Yea Forums or Yea Forums you're right, it's mainstream now. But cartoons are still literally fucking taboo for adults
skub is fucking shit tho
A nerd is someone who is intelligent, studious and learned, but physically underdeveloped / unattractive. They do possess marketable skills.
I suspect the word started out as shorthand for 'Brainerd'.
Adversely, many of the people who claim to be 'nerds' are really just 'geeks'. A 'geek' used to be a circus performer whose contribution to the fun consisted of eating foreign objects and live animals. Nowadays, it refers to someone with too much interest in a trivial subject, usually fantasy media such as tv shows, movies and (comic) books. They invest so much cerebral space in these they are usually notably lacking in other areas. Physically they tend to be worse off than the nerds.
While a nerd can become extremely successful, with Bill Gates and Steven Hawking as the type specimens, geeks never do.
No, no, no. You are conflating different things.
No he doesn't....
>introverts are suspicious about suddenly being a flavor of the month.
What a fucking shock.
This looks like young Harry Partridge art
>nerds complain
yeah i think that's it
Descriptors IS the regular way.
I mean what society hasn't used descriptors to describe characteristics of a person?
"This person is old." "This person is a slave." "This person is homosexual." "This person is rich as fuck." "This person is Mexican." "This person is a nerd."
lol no I'm not
its very simple look and is often not accurate .especially when its hard to measure like geek or nerd, goth, etc
Left is nerd, right is geeks
Nerds were never accepted, it's been turned into a marketing brand. Old school traditional nerds aren't accepted just because Stacey Normiengton wears a Star Ward shirt or watches MCU movies.
But you're right on the last point. Watching hobbies I've had all my life not only morph beyond recognition but feeling like I'm being pushed out of those hobbies by fad chasers and then being insulted by those involved if I'm not happy about it sucks.
A propensity towards mathematics and the
sciences.
>pro-skub
Dropped. On;y child molesters like skub, it makes it easier to penetrate little boys.
Am I on /tg/ right now?
Personally, I don't understand what "nerd" means anymore. Everyone is a nerd for something. If it's not pop culture, it's sports, fashion, history, music, religion, etc.
What makes pop culture so special?
I only use twitter for following manga and hentai artists.
It doesn't matter because "neckbeard", "basement dweller", "manbaby/child", "NEET", and similar words are the actual perjoratives that have replaced "nerd" in popular lexicon.
Personally you're a nerd if you take an interest to an obsessive point.
There is no nerd "community" you autist
Ask your mom
/tg/ and Yea Forums have a surprising amount of overlap
You act like the normal people are the ones with a problem. Society at large is awful to you because you're awful to them
an encyclopedic knowledge of a niche interest. i.e superhero comics.
Depends. Are we talking about Order Of The Stick or monstergirls?
What about closet furries?
this. its one thing to like, say, stranger things on netflix, and other to cosplay as a character from it at conventions and know everything about it and be super autistic into it
It's a lot more complex than you make it out to be
See, what happens is that nerds tend to go into things like art and writing because they can't express themselves socially. People recognize their talent and praise them for it, leading them to gradually come out of their shell enough to join the workforce and get a job doing it. They then make popular media inspired by nerd shit, making it mainstream.
It's a lot like what happend with christianity. It was originally an extension of judaism, but was spread to non-jews and has nothing to do with jewish culture anymore
IDK nothin about IRL furry, but I can I again they get down to fap to regular anthro too.
Not all cosplayers are real nerds/geeks, mainly with women. There's tons of people who cosplay because it's an easy way to gey attention. Most Poison Ivy and Nu Harley cosplayers belong in that category, or Yoko cosplayers back in the day.
This.
It''s the cultural version of gentrification, happened to multiple music communities and is working its way through vidya, comics and tabletop games exactly the same way.
In b4 someone posts that comic about how it's about girls joining the group & things going to shit, that's just a symptom.
Why so many meta threads lately?
I once saw a group of nerds gather around a football player jock and start asking him math questions he couldn't answer, they'd all laughed at him every time he answered wrong. I thought the jock would get up and beat the shit out of them but he didn't, looking back I should have done something, sorry jock bro.
Girls like the one with brown hair don't actually exist, btu I wish they did.
They do but they're all overweight
jesus jakes grand kid is hot for a ... 2 month old?
hold on, how old is she again?
They do.
They have autism, incidence is 1/10th that of boys but it happens.
Just like the male autists they generally stay in a dank basement somewhere thus you don't see them.
More like its easier to fuck all the hot skub bitches you wish you had.
She passes the Harkness Test, that's all that matters!
this
nerds aren't necessarily comic dorks, there's car nerds (/o/), gun nerds (/k/), etc
I also think people don't get that there's no such thing as a "nerd oriented hobby". Anything can be nerdy if you make it so
You don't go outside often, do you?
I post screencapped Yea Forums posts and link my patreon on twitter. It helps pay the rent desu
because watching people who picked on you for loving something and then saying they love that same thing later on just because its now mainstream is heart breaking
I see nerds as people that put too much effort into something. Bonus points if that thing is ultimately pointless. This can be memorizing decades of history of comic book characters, learning complex interactions in rules for tabletop or video games, or just learning a bunch of useless facts about something you like, be it cars, a style of music, anything really.
This is ultimately what causes a lot of the hatred of previously "nerd" things going mainstream. When the people that make whatever the nerds obsess about see that there's a chance for a wider audience, they have to dumb things down and simplify to attract as many people as possible. Things get rebooted and simplified. This does two things. First, it makes the hundreds or thousands of hours the nerds have already put into their hobby feel wasted, as they are no longer rewarded for their old mastery, and they don't get a chance to spend hundreds or thousands of more hours learning about new stuff because the new stuff was made for a mainstream audience and there simply isn't that much to learn.
My problem is everyone's taste is fucking shit. Maybe if they'd stop obsessing over Marvel movies and read some Guyver or watch Buckaroo Banzai I wouldn't be so annoyed.
Their interest and capacity of buying as many things they can with their favorite logo on it
in short you see nerds as autists and fake nerds are non autistic people who are culturally appropriating autistic culture
Can we all just agree that this nerd, anti-nerd, fake nerd thing is really all just an umbrella argument for women having only the most shallowest of interest in things?
>stop being an incel
Whatever, but that's literally where most of the hate comes from. People accept nerdy things now because women engage in those nerdy things now. That's it. And the hate for fake nerds is aimed mostly at women because people treat women more nicely than they do men if they were to engage in these nerdy activities.
Who is the biggest fake nerd man that people have a problem with? I seriously can't even think of one.
A geek is the guy who bites off chicken heads for money at the county fair.
Don't compare me to skub-lovers, you ignorant shit.
Posting on Yea Forums
>Who is the biggest fake nerd man that people have a problem with? I seriously can't even think of one.
Wil Wheaton?
What it comes down to for me is integrity. If non-nerds want to learn about nerd things, that's fine by me. What I have a problem with is when people who make things for nerds start watering down what they make. I don't read comics (here for the cartoons, which aren't really a nerd thing) so my go-to example is the elder scrolls series. I started the series with Morrowind, which was already a heavily casualized version of Daggerfall. But Morrowind got really popular, so with Oblivion they threw out a bunch of the lore, reduced the number of skills, spells, and equipment slots, gave you quest markers on your map, and let you fast travel from anywhere to any map marker you'd discovered. Then for Skyrim, they went further. Even fewer skills, tossed out the custom spell creation entirely, made a system for enemy difficulty that meant you're fighting worthless opponents 80% of the time, and made a bunch of the skills have perks at level 100 (which is too easy to grind to) that completely trivialize the game. All of the challenge of learning and playing the game has been sucked out by the people that made it in order to make a quick buck.
Its a bit hard to call Wil Wheaton a fake nerd when he was literally a part of Star Trek, even if people hated him on Star Trek
Why do people believe that ostracized people don't exist anymore? Just because nerd stuff is popular now don't mean that people stopped to make fun of people. I'm pretty young and in my experience people just stoped to call me nerd and started to call me a creep, they were not wrong, but they hurt my fee fees
according to the comic, penises
>Can we all just agree that this nerd, anti-nerd, fake nerd thing is really all just an umbrella argument for women having only the most shallowest of interest in things?
Women are deeply interested in fashion, social media and taking selfies of themselves, makeup, celebrity gossip and backstabbing their best friends. They only have shallow interest in nerd things that they pretend to like because it's trendy
I hate hearing normalfags go on about "wow I'm such a gamer I play Red Dead Redemption 2 (or whatever the normalfag game of the month is)" or "anime/manga" fans who read or watch nothing but battle shonen. Plenty of guys do that shit too; I had someone try to bring up Death Note like it was fucking obscure.
But you're right, it's the shallowness that's irritating. Getting pushed out of things I like by people who don't actually care due to those things pandering to them is frustrating.
