I always associated with it being obsessed with something the general population would not be so.
It's not restricted to pop culture or education. Sports are usually considered manly or widely viewed but there are definite nerds who follow every aspect and do stats. Same with people who really know about guns or the composition of drugs despite them being viewed as non-nerd things

Which is ridiculous, because football, for example, is not a healthy sport or culture in anyway, especially for high schoolers. It induces brain damage, long term, and lays down a lifetime of shit diet. Not to mention that sports stadium food and hours of sitting down eating "game food" is an even worse ingrained habbit than most atrophied nerds. Take a look at football fans in general, they're often fat fucks with terrible habbits.
