Basically we're using sports as a stand-in for gladiatorial games. We want to see people compete, beat the hell out of each other and get hurt doing so, because combat is extremely entertaining. They won't let us televise real gladiators, but a lot of our modern sports are hyper-commercialized versions of the same thing with a ball in the place of indiscriminate murder.

Soccer won't truly become a thing in the US until there's a singular extraordinary talent/personality that can capture the nation's attention.
