The Knicks have no real incentive to win games though, in fact they should probably tank for a better draft pick. But the players don't care about draft picks so they will actually try to win the game.

Each team plays 82 games. Teams in the same conference (east/west) will play each other 3-4 times. Teams will play cross conference 2 times (one home and one away for the most part). This is a completely arbitrary number of games which makes a lot of regular season games meaningless.
