LaMelo wasn't an effective scorer in Australia, has very questionable shooting mechanics, and has the fundamental problem that he's really bad at taking guys off the dribble because he's not physical and shies away from contact. he has great basketball vision and passing, but terrible shot selection and decision making and effort. so you're basically betting on his size and his passing vision to make up for all of his many, many, many other downsides, and that's before you take into account the offcourt stuff.
