it's been like this for over a decade. They've had some competition with better AFC teams in the past, like the Payton prime Broncos, the prime Flacco Ravens, Big ben and the stoolers when they were actually good. Those teams have come and gone, their stars faded, and now the AFC is a shell of what it once was in terms of competition, though it was never close to the NFC anyways.

The Pats basically get an easy ride to the playoffs every single year. It's not that they aren't a good team, they are the BEST team in the league, but they're in a situation in which there's no other really solid teams to challenge them, the only one that really can this year is the Chiefs.
