I thought split was alright when I was there 9 years ago. Zagreb was decent too besides not being on the coast. Dubrovnik was the most aesthetic but packed with tourists. The patricians choice however, is Zadar.

We went to Hvar but felt so out of place. There's teenagers in fucking yachts in the habour whilst me and my friends were walking an 1 hour from our camp site to the main harbour lol. really nice place though if you can afford it. We also took the ferry from Dubrovnik to some island for the day but I can't remember what it was called.

Don't know about other Islands but all the rich guys in yacths had Scandinavian flags flying (this was like summer 2010 - don't know if things have changed).
