2) The league can penalize for tampering after its own investigation by handing out suspensions to players without pay or huge fines (six figures) to the team

They can, to some degree, cut down on the teams shamelessness when it comes to tampering, but you can't do shit about players talking with each other.

They'd probably be better off scrapping tampering rules altogether. A free-for-all would at least be fun.

Look what they did with tanking: they didn't actually fix tanking, they just removed the incentive for the worst, most egregious bottoming-out because that's what people bitch about on talk radio and blogs.

I mean, changing the lottery odds pretty much did fix tanking, which is notably different from just being bad. Anyone overtly tanking now is an idiot.

You still have a huge incentive to purposefully be bad if you're not going to make the playoffs. Being the 6th-worst team is way better than being the 13th-worst team, odds-wise. So there's still a massive reason to tank.

The change they made is that there's no advantage to being the worst team instead of the third worst team. So they got rid of the worst, most embarrassing tanking - teams trying to have a 10-win season. But that's it.

Horford, Richardson and Harris are all at least OK shooters. they're not a lights out shooting team but they're not going to be 5 guys in the paint every possession either.

But they lost Butler who was their closer and would take over games for them and they lost Reddick who is one of the nest 3pt shooters in the league. Embiid and Simmons need to take a big leap

Butler's good and I'm obviously not going to deny that. The lack of a "closer" is their most glaring weakness. But every team has flaws. They should be one of the best defensive teams in the league, they have a bunch of guys who can hit open jumpers, and they have 5 guys who can be useful and score with the ball in their hands. That's a recipe for a really, really hard team to beat.

I play every day and unlock atributes. You get more points if you play on higher difficulty. Right now I'm playing on hall of fame with 12 minute quarters. So it's easy to rank up that way with a big man. All you have to do is grab rebounds and get put backs and blocks.

It's definitely possible center is the best way to upgrade the team though, just because there's way more good centers than forwards in the league.

I think Klay is the perfect counterpart for Curry, he provides spacing and D while still being relatively low usage. Russell in the other hand is a poor man’s Curry, and he’s younger so they could maybe get more from him in a trade. Also Klay’s contract will probably be harder to move

Abolish the NBA draft. Make a new class of “rookie free agents” who forego college eligibility, hire an agent, etc. like it’s a draft. They enter free agency at the same time as NBA players. Klay is a fine defender. He's definitely not great but he has good length and he can be a really good man defender when he locks in. He's definitely far better than Russell. Also there's emotional components here as well and I don't think the Warriors are coldblooded enough to actually trade Klay. Also, if you think Klay is less valuable to the Warriors than Russell, the same logic would also apply to any potential trading partner.

The Clippers have flaws but I have a hard time seeing which Western Conference teams are better than them, unless you arbitrarily decide that the Clippers and only the Clippers are going to deal with injury problems.

I love Jokic but I think Murray will be somewhat exposed next year, Millsap is fading fast, and I don't love their roster overall.

the important part of a player's contract is whether it stops you from adding talent, whether it constrains your team-building. and there's basically only one offseason where having CP3 on your team meaningfully constrains your team-building (2020 offseason) because after that he's an expiring and becomes relatively easy to move if need be.

People talk about players forcing their way out of small market teams. How many times has this happened where it wasn't because the team had fucked up over and over again, or the team was terrible and making no real efforts to get better, or the player felt like the team had stabbed him in the back? The big examples it seems like everyone's talking about are PG and Russ leaving OKC, AD leaving New Orleans, and Kawhi leaving San Antonio. But OKC was looking to blow up their team even before PG put in a trade request. New Orleans had fucked up building a team around AD for years and years and years and years and they were going nowhere. And Kawhi leaving was because he felt betrayed by the Spurs.

Are there any other examples here? Are small market teams actually victimized, or are they just dumb / incompetent / cheap / unlucky?

I agree with you. Plenty of teams with big markets are undesirable, like Chicago, Atlanta, NY, Washington. On the flip side, places like Indiana, Miami, and Utah did pretty well in the most recent FA. It really does come down to competence of management, and the surrounding team. The only exception really just seems to be the city of LA, but the draw seems to be weather, family, branding, etc. I think the small market disadvantage definitely gets overblown

For the record, I would class injuries as bad luck. So that include Cousins, and also Kawhi, since the injury ultimately led to the bad vibes between him and the team.

Also New Orleans made a lot of shitty moves in addition to acquiring those guys, and the fact that OKC was bad is a good explanation for why they wanted to blow it up but it doesn't change the fact that the narrative about market size is wrong.
