I'm genuinely curious, does it have something to do with USA being a mostly-suburban country?

actually that's why I was wondering, to me american football seems a very grownup sport for many reasons, something you can't do unless it's in a controlled environment of some kind.
like when I was a kid, even if we didn't have enough people or a proper field, we could still improvise a goalpost with rock/wooden sticks and play all sorts of soccer-related shit (soccer tennis, penalty kicks, something we called "miutza" etc). One goal is one point, you don't need to don yourself in armor to play etc.
but like with american football, you need that proper protection or else you're injure yourself as crazy as a kid. you need a relatively big field, you need to keep track of downs and scrimmage lines and shit.
How do you do that with a few kids in the backyard?

When we were young at school we would play two hand touch football (basically no blocking, all passing, and a tackle is a two handed tag). A lot of youth also play flag football and even adult leagues exist. Organized leagues with pads exist even for young kids for a price and public school leagues start around age 12. Many high schools in the south fund nearly their entire athletic department with football revenue. In a large stretch of the country football is the premiere amateur sport and nothing else comes remotely close. Imagine the Indiana basketball culture of yesteryear but it's American football in the south.

I went to high school in the south and our football team got half a million dollars in funding whereas the rest of us got jack shit. Football is almost like a religion down here

Every day (every damn day) after school me and about 8-10 kids would get together at my best friends house and play in the lot next to his house. We played full tackle (some kids couldn't handle so we'd rotate a lot through the years) and I was all-time QB most of the time. Also would play after church in the parking lot. can play catch or 4 downs anywhere with 3 people. It's no different from getting a soccer ball and kicking it around. You don't need cleats, shin guards, etc to kick a ball around right? same shit
