This. If you look at American football playbooks you see a wide variety of styles that have evolved over decades. West Coast offense, spread, option, wildcat, etc are all completely unique and identifiable offensive approaches.

Compare the depth of American football to soccer, where establishing any sort of identity is an achievement in itself, and the mind boggles. Even the most high profile squads can fall into aimless and repetitive play, or rely on hero ball to score. Soccer strategy is unevolved and shallow, stated plainly. Play short passes vs play it long, fast tempo vs possession, cross deep vs pass it in. There's not much to it, quite boring from a high level perspective.

I hate soccer but you're making a stupid comparison. Soccer requires 500 times more on the fly adjustments, teamwork and coordination. Almost all of the start of the game goes on before the game, soccer players have set plays but its all adjustments which is a skill. Soccer is gay but its fucking skillful to play and be the goat at.

I could have as easily pointed to the variety of play seen in the game of basketball. The contrast in tactical variety between high level soccer and the NBA is astonishing. Where the NBA has dozens if not hundreds of unique, branching, adaptive offensive sets, more often than not goals in soccer occur as a result of human error and random chance not unlike that of an only slightly more directed pinball machine.

Soccer requires a great deal of skill, but not nearly as much tactical know how as gridiron. In gridiron you need to constantly make adjustments within a quarter of a second or you’re beat and the other team has 7 points on the board.
There are always 2 huge tactical battles happening in gridiron. The passing game, and line play. Line play is universally ignored by pundits but is incredibly nuanced. Knowing whose job it is to pick up a blitzing safety within 1 second of the snap is the difference between a successful play and a season ending injury for your QB.
In soccer you can just gut out a victory with a random blooter or shit house long ball and bus parking. You see it all the time in cup ties where League 1 sides are playing against big PL clubs.

The moving pick has really been a tactical revolution in basketball. Basically in 2012 or whatever Popovich figured out that NBA refs just don’t call moving screens so you can basically use your power forward as an offensive tackle to clear space for open 3’s.
