To be fair to Xhaka, he has a lot of positives to his game. He's a very good passer of the ball. He was one of the most influential players in the league last season in terms of his touches of the ball and passes into the final third. He's a progressive player who seeks to transition the ball from defence to attack quickly. He doesn't hide when things aren't going his way. He's one of the most significant deep-lying playmakers in the league.

With all that said, he loses his head under pressure and is prone to committing needless fouls in dangerous positions (the penalty on Sunday, the penalty against Brighton last season, etc., etc.). He doesn't deal well with a high press, which is an increasingly popular tactic in the Premier League, and can get flustered very quickly when faced with opponents who get in his face. He lacks the mobility to deal with high tempo encounters and would probably be better suited to playing in a less intense league like Italy.
