The only thing that the FIA looks particularly stupid about right now is giving in when the drivers cried about getting off track penalties in that spot, but it wouldn't even have specifically applied in this situation.

What's impressive about that one is that they redesigned everything from 130R to the front stretch after McNish nearly an hero'd a few months earlier then immediately realized how badly they fucked it up and had to rebuild almost an exact replica of the old chicane for bikes within 6-8 months of tearing it up. So there's one goofy double chicane layout that was used for a single international event.
What's most odd is that both of those crashes were bad because the barriers narrow where the track passes over a local road.
