The game is getting so competitive that basically you have to be 6'7 or taller while also being able to shoot threes, you can't just have big tough guys who only play defense. Basically the only way to be extremely tall AND be an elite shooter is to have an extremely tall father who can spend years of your childhood teaching you how to perfect your shot.

Larry Bird is from a town in the middle of nowhere so he got to develop his own style instead of learning to play in a system that limits his ability as an individual.
