There's no real reason to make pitchers hit, for well over 100 years now they've been fucking atrocious because the position is so specialized, it's only the odd generation talent like Ruth or Ohtani who can actually hit and pitch competently at the same time.

The pitcher determines the pace of play. The average time between pitches is around 23 seconds. If that's cut down to 20 the average game time reduces by as much as 15 minutes.

That's why they say that "momentum in baseball only goes as far as the next day's starting pitcher." The pitcher is pretty much our equivalent to the quarterback except in opposite roles; he and the catcher orchestrate the entire defensive side of the game. To ask him to bat is like asking a quarterback to play defense.
