They are still Croats, those in western part of Dalmatia.
People in much of Slavonia and former Military Frontier are mostly Serbs.
Between those who converted to Islam and those just displaced by constant warfare, not much remained of old Croats in those regions.

Many are original Chakavian/Kajkavian Croatians who simply got assimilated by Servs/Vlachs and bosnians so they no longer have Chakavian/Kajkavian/Croatian culture.

However for regions I speak of, there was no such assimilation, except maybe later but on smaller scale. Those regions were totally depopulated, life was virtually impossible so people ran away.

Seriously without a large part of Slavonia and Serbian populated areas aka former warzones (eastern Lika, Zagora) Croatia would be Slovakia-Poland tier.
Life here is as good as anywhere else in eastern EU as long as you don't live in southern Slavonia and depopulated former warzones.
