All Finns should be purged from the NHL

If you look at the NHL today you have 31 teams and on the those teams if we have 558 forward and defense jobs not including healthy scratches.

For forwards you have 372 jobs available. of that 372, 186 will be top 6 players which means you have to be able to scorer 20 goals or at least put up 50 points in a season. Alot of guys can score 20-30 goals in minors or in juniors but those are so much more different than the NHL. The speed is different and defense/goalies are MUCH better in the NHL. So if you arent able to get one of those 186 spots you are left with 186 spots to fight for. now split that number in half for role players (vets, PK specialists, dominant faceoff center men). So now left with 96 positions. You arent better than the top scorers in the league and havent established a niche role yet. So at that point you just have to hope you can put up enough points to justify a 3rd or 4th line role.

Defense is even worse because for offense it is easier for a rookie to get a job since the most basic metric for them is how many points you put up. But on defense, while points are great, you need to be good defensively. Which means an aging vet could get more playing time than a rookie because that vet may be better defensively even if a rookie is putting up ok offensive numbers. And learning defense is incredibly difficult. First you have to learn to play a mans game coming from juniors then if you manage to impress in the AHL you have to do it all over again in the NHL. Thats why a vet can last so much longer in the NHL as a defensemen because they solved the puzzle that so many Dmen fail to solve. And from a number perspective the top 4 dmen in the league make up 124 of the 186 spots. So you have 62 jobs potentially up for grabs and in reality you have 31 spots since most teams have their 5 dmen spot picked.

Before you could be in the NHL by beating the shit out of someone or being SUPER physical. But the game has changed so now you need to be able adapt to the speed of the game as well as strategic the game has been. I love listening to Spittin Chiclets because you get that perspective on how hard the NHL can be since alot of the guys interviewed are guys who are one or two bad seasons for a career in Europe/KHL. Biz said it best when he said you NEED to find that reason to stay in the NHL whether it is because you are locker room guy (which can still be a huge factor in todays NHL) or because you are able to do one thing really well like be a PK specialist. I am sure there are players who never make the NHL but clearly could play because of a number of reasons like not the right fit to the org/team or just not developing fast enough (late bloomers).
