They are cheap and they aren't. They paid DeGrom, but they aren't going to keep Syndergaard and probably not Wheeler. They took on the Cano contract, but the gave up their best prospect to get Seattle to take back money.

The Mets problem is they hand out some contracts that are in the neighborhood of what the real heavy hitter teams give out, but if they go bad, there is no will to push through them with more money like the Red Sox did with Sandoval or the Yankees did with Ellsbury. They double down on this relative tightness with the payroll by seemingly erasing any payroll flexibility they do have year over year. Often giving up prospects or taking lesser returns when selling just to get money off the books.

Taking on the Cano contract was just bizarre for a team with a lot of dead money and Jeff McNeil already on the roster making minimum. Then when Cano, fairly predictably, started to decline they just turtle up.

Why would the mest acquire Stroman? What 10D chess are they playing?

He's under contract through next season. He's a Wheeler/Syndergaard replacement.

I'm not sure free agent Wheeler is going to cost less than Syndergaard through arbitration, so I'm just a little confused at the timing of all of this. I think Philly wasn't really in the market for Asian players when a lot of them were coming over. I think they were bad when Ichiro and Matsui were posted. I don't remember about DiceK or Yu, but that was probably when they were getting better or good, right? They had some stiff rotations in their contending years. Nowadays, you don't see as many Asian players coming over. The cap on posting fees makes it less attractive.

lads I just signed up to play in my company softball game. I havent played on a team on an organized sport in like 5 years. but I watch baseball every day. How can I not embarrass myself?

I'm thinking of going to the batting cage a couple times before the game and playing some catch with my nephew to brush the rust off my glove.

It's softball, user. It's probably just slow pitch. Take a couple of swings in a batting cage with actual baseballs and you'll crush the guts out of a softball. Playing catch will probably help too. Playing catch is always fun though.

See if you can find a slow pitch machine, since the angle of the pitches is a lil different and if you're used to hitting baseballs it can fuck you up
If you never swung at a baseball much to begin with, working on swing basics and stamina will be more important so you don't look like a retard getting gassed three swings in
