About 1/6 of the US population speaks at least some Spanish, either having been taught it in schools as part of foreign language education or having learned it from their immigrant families/communities.
Even among white people, it's a useful language in the US. You can communicate more clearly with service people and be able to tell when they're talking about having spit in your food.
