If it's a new part, maybe a manufacturing defect, or it was assembled improperly, or they fucked something up while changing the setup, or maybe it suffered damage from hitting a curb or debris earlier

If it's an used part, maybe it was too worn and they thought it would be fine for a 24h race, all components are have their lifespan rated in hours or kilometers but those are usually conservative estimates and you can go much further if you wish...

There's a couple of videos of a Z4 GT3 being assembled from the ground up, think about how much shit can go wrong there. Its the little things that make the difference between a team like RAM Racing and Black Falcon

The board is more a reference to the Nurburgring - there's often a privateer Viper running there.
The famous Zakspeed team had also been intending to run one of the most recent Vipers but withdrew due to dissatisfaction with BOP - I don't think they had any factory support this time around though.

M8 you have to understand that in racing everything has a lifespan and there's no such thing as a part lasting forever. And generally, the higher performance the part provides, the shorter it's lifespan. A higher quality team can obviously afford the parts that provide the best performance, but in turn the margin for error is extremely slim.

That car had contact with one of the R8s earlier in the race. It didn't look like too much at the time, but could have weakened something.

imagine trying to drive through Eau Rouge without lifting and not being able to trust that your suspension won't fall apart

An example of this is brake discs. There are brake pads (the thing that grabs the disc to actually slow it down, think like a ninja doing a double handed katana grab) that allow you to do the ENTIRE RACE without changing it. However stopping power is relatively low.

On the other hand theres super aggressive brake pads that shorten braking distances in almost half, but they will eat the disc like candy, and will definitely require AT LEAST one pit stop exclusively to change the brake disc and pads, you should've seen the 6 do it in this race.

All teams are required to make a 5 minute "technical pit stop", which is usually meant for a brake change. But you still have a choice of going with a conservative pad and save time in the pits or going aggressive and changing pads mid race.

V8 supercars does several pad changes during the 1000km.

if your brakes start to degrade you can increase your braking distance to compensate (unless they just straight up 100% go out)
but if the suspension breaks you're fucked right away and you can't drive around it

Euros are scared of burnouts in pit lane so they have to warm the tires another way

To expand on this here in the US the GT3 cars run such aggressive compounds that the top teams are changing the steel rotors after every single session. You'll see stacks of the things sitting outside their paddock at the end of the day. I stole a couple to try to make a clock before I realized that hanging one on the wall would be a huge pain in the ass.

Both 20 and 4 are on identical pitstop cycle and if they can edge out max duration stints then they can get the rest of the race done with only 3 more pits, but if something doesn't go just right for them then it's 4 stops. The #1 audi has a bit more wiggle room to choose when pitting and making it a bit easier for them to do only 3 pits.
