>For 15-20m a year I mean on the one hand, if I were a top level sportsman, I'd probably want to maximise my earnings too - but if Ric were to win a WDC then he'd increase his earnings massively. And he won't win a WDC with Renault. With RB there's certainly a far better chance. Even if they're not WDC contenders yet, they have the best aerodynamicist on the grid, they have maybe the best chassis on the grid, and they're just generally much better placed than Renault.
>and a clause that lets him escape if a Ferrari or Mercedes seat becomes available to him, apparently. Those seats may never become available though. Seems a bit dumb to move to a worse team on the off chance that one of the best teams might have a space for you in the future.
>His pride dealt his demise Perhaps.
They were allowed to race at RB though. There were never any team orders as far as I remember. Ric and Max each won 2 races in 2018, and Ric got 2 poles while Max got none, and also Ric got 4 fastest laps and Max only got 2 - although actually at the Canadian GP they had that flag waving error that ended the race early, and actually Ric had set a faster lap on lap 70 but it was discounted due to the flag error, so really it should be 5 fastest laps for Ric and only 1 for Max.
>red bull switches to honda Surely Ric would have had access to the same info as RB when they made the decision to go with Honda. That is, he would've known that Honda were improving and were very likely a better choice, as they have turned out to be.
>RIC interview : "every time Renault came back into f1 they managed to win at some point" or something like that That's just very weak reasoning. It doesn't mean anything. I think what happened is Ric got too stroppy and kept believing he was being treated unfairly at RB. To me it never seemed that he was, but surely he could have worked it out with the team if he felt that way. Moving was a dumb move, in my view.
Hunter Jenkins

>but if Ric were to win a WDC then he'd increase his earnings massively
Tell me a non-WDC driver that's earning what Ricciardo is right now. The fact of the matter is we now have some meat on the bones of what his contract looks like- a generous salary and if the Renault miracle happens he's in the box seat; if it doesn't and RBR never quite get there with Honda he's no worse off; if they do well then, it was abundantly clear that Max was going to be the Red Bull winning titles. Meanwhile, should a seat in the front two teams appear, he's also got a parachute.
He didn't have a realistic shot of starting this year, next year, or the year after in a seat that was going to win a title. Races? Sure. Title? Nope. So he's found a comfortable place to park while he waits for the next train. Not an ideal move perhaps, but in the absence of something better, not a bad one.
Michael Edwards

If you're correct, you could argue his circumstances were the same at Red Bull, with the exception that Max was always going to be favoured with upgrades and strategy. Without the generous salary and escape clause, should he be able to action it.
The salary thing is one more reason why he won't go to Ferrari or Mercedes. His salary is now too high. If either of them DOES need a new driver then surely they'll go for someone younger with lower salary demands. But both of them are probably set for the next few years at least.
>if the Renault miracle happens It won't.
>if it doesn't and RBR never quite get there with Honda he's no worse off RBR-Honda just won a race. The Renault team haven't won a race since they came back, nor have they come close. RBR has been winning races all throughout the V6 era, regardless of engine. It's a nonsensical move.
>if they do well then, it was abundantly clear that Max was going to be the Red Bull winning titles To whom? A defeatist like you? Nico stayed at Mercedes despite not having the same talents as Hamilton (he said this himself). Ric and Max are very evenly matched drivers. And Ricciardo did BETTER in 2018 than Max. 2 poles vs. 0. 4 fastest laps vs. 2 (but it should have been 5 - 1, the flag issue at the end of Canada invalidated Ric's fastest lap but it shouldn't have done).
This is literally the most defeatist, weak, pathetic argument of all time.
I don't think he's been exposed necessarily but I think you're right that the big teams will look at rookies with lower salary demands if they ever need a new driver, which they probably won't for the next few years.
Angel Richardson
But at least in RB he could aim for podiums, now with renaul he can aim for Q2 at best

>p2 in f1.5 gio is shit

Ah yeah I heard something about this. If that's true then that's yet another reason why Ricciardo will never drive for Merc or Ferrari.
Maybe you should read what I said: >I mean on the one hand, if I were a top level sportsman, I'd probably want to maximise my earnings too - but if Ric were to win a WDC then he'd increase his earnings massively. And he won't win a WDC with Renault. Short term earnings might be attractive but he's basically just thrown away his F1 career now. He was a good driver in a good car and he's thrown it all away. He won't get another chance in a good car. Ferrari and Merc are both full and probably won't have any spaces. They show no signs of needing a replacement soon - I know people are going on about Vettel but I think this is ridiculously premature. He is still ahead of Leclerc. I think they would only dump him if his performances got severely, severely worse. There are no signs of this imminently.
I mean we all know the real reason Ricciardo left. He was going on last season saying that he was being treated like a #2. Christian Horner was publicly saying this, and how the team were trying to assure Ric that he wasn't a #2, and that the team would treat him fairly. But Ric left anyway.
Maybe he had bad advice from his team? Maybe his advisors or family or whatever were putting in his head this idea that he was being treated as a #2. Even if there were issues, I'm sure he could have worked them out - the team seemed willing to work it out. Nico and Hamilton were allowed to race at Merc and that's what the RB situation looked like too.
It's just sad really. A really promising driver but he's thrown it all away.
Christian Martinez
So the existence of Webber is the only "evidence" you can present to support your argument that Max, in your words, "was always going to be favoured with upgrades and strategy"?
So really what you're saying is that you have no evidence whatsoever to support your suggestion that Max "was always going to be favoured with upgrades and strategy"? Horner last year kept saying that both drivers were treated equally and allowed to race each other. They raced each other the whole year. So I just don't know where you're getting this idea from? Maybe I'm wrong but that's what I remember from last year. Do you have a source?
Benjamin Reed
It feels good that now Gasly is as quick as MAx, does it not? RIC was slower than GAS and is now in some trash team properly exposed.

Of course it is bitterly disappointing, especially that this should happen here at my home race, in front of such a large crowd of fans. It could not have happened at a worse time. As for the problem itself, I had no warning that anything was wrong and as I exited the pits, I just lost power. Is it really 5x his normal salary? That is a lot. How can Renault afford that? And surely it's a poor investment when they could be spending that on the car?
Maybe it would be tempting, sure, but it's still a massive shame. He could have at least done one more year with RBR to see how Honda would turn out - but really he should have known Honda were going to improve because RBR themselves had done the analysis and come to that conclusion. Ricciardo would have surely had access to the same analysis.
That's not an argument mate.

It is crazy how Hamilton got it so right. I mean sure, he would have been shown by Mercedes what they were working on, and he would have known what McLaren were working on too. But obviously in 2012, his last season with McLaren, McLaren were ahead of Mercedes by quite a margin. Then as soon as Hamilton switched, in 2013 Mercedes were ahead. So it was an inspired move. Unlike Alonso, who seems to be completely incapable of assessing whether a team is going to be good or not - or perhaps the real explanation is that he just lets his emotions and short temper get in the way of his brain when he's making these decisions.
Going to Ferrari was obviously one of Alonso's good career moves. The bad ones were leaving McLaren after only a year to rejoin Renault, and leaving Ferrari in a strop to rejoin McLaren when they were doing shit.
Noah Howard
What would you call the Grosjean accident from Alonsos perspective? Though at Japan he was balme to for driving on Kimis front wing.

>Is it really 5x his normal salary? That is a lot. How can Renault afford that? Renault has a lot of money, don't worry about them. Ricciardo is the only "mature but not too old" driver on the grid with a decent amount of podiums/wins that was available. Still got scammed though.
> And surely it's a poor investment when they could be spending that on the car? Ressources are not the issue, they have a "savoir-faire" deficit, Abiteboul is a shit Team Principal and they got rid of Vasseur who is managing Sauber quite well this season. Btw Sauber would kick Renault in the ribs if they had any other rookie instead of this shitter of Gio.

I think it's a massive shame that Renault isn't doing that well, to be honest. It would be great to see their 2005 / 2006 form again.
But yeah, unfortunately they don't look like they're going to make massive strides any time soon... even McLaren is beating them with their own engine. And yeah, spending all that money on Ricciardo, instead of poaching some good engineers and aerodynamicists from other teams, was probably a bad move.
