I think most people are just waking up to the fact that all the Scots do is bitch, whine, and pretend they've been/are oppressed, while at the same time rejecting independence from their 'oppressors'.

The Anglo-Irish upper class of which the Duke of Wellington was a part is not the same as the modern day Irish. Sectarianism meant Irish identity ended up being constructed almost entirely around Catholicism. The Protestant Anglo-Irish that contributed to the empire all either fled the country after the Free State's independence or became assimilated into the new Irish society.

This is completely different to Scotland, where the exact same class of people who got rich off the empire still exist and live.
