yeah =0.27 is my cpu's eval. looks like a really difficult position to try and push for White. after 6...Kf7 Black looks totally fine

no openings, no blitz games. read 'my system' by aron nimzowitsch. the canon is the most important thing but a lot of it is too advanced for a 1000 player. my system is a sort of bible for new players (and it even applies to high-level chess). ezpz to find online. today's chess kids have forgotten how important certain books are; specifically 'think like a GM', 'dvoretsky endgame manual' and 'method in chess'. 'black is OK' is another great one

i play 1.e4 as White, grunfeld and najdorf and yet still i don't like the thought of accepting the pawn. somehow the b2 pawn in the najdorf feels much less poisoned to me than the c3 pawn does in the smith-morra. but that probably doesn't hold up theoretically

yes they are, and a lot of players take adderall which has the same effect. i have never heard of a top player doing it though, and they don't seem like the type to try it. players definitely are not able to keep full concentration for six hours so speed would help a lot with that. but there's a side-effect to speed that could be totally destructive. chess players are known to feel a ton of adrenaline during games, and meth might just make things too intense. a lot of players already have terrible issues with nerves (such as Chucky). imagine this guy on meth: youtube.com/watch?v=pUgvAoTzWBA
paranoia and maybe even heart issues could occur. heart rates really go up high during games (this has actually been studied). i could definitely see benzo's (anti-anxiety) helping a person calm down before an important match and i'm sure a ton do that

personally i get stoned before a lot of games (when possible) because i play a lot better when i'm in that state plus it's more enjoyable. ain't nothin' they can do about it. i did fall asleep during a game once but my opponent was kind enough to wake me up by poking me and asking "hey dude, are you alright?" no i was not... but i've got things all dialed in now
castle early and often. just don't do it long because you'll be a tempo behind. Kb1 or ...Kb8 is almost always necessary after castling long. there are of course many exceptions though, especially when your opponent has already done the same or the Queens are off the board (tempo and attack becomes less important)

brings a piece that was out of the game onto a perfect square. you threaten to exchange a knight for a bishop (usually advantageous). you attack a piece (Bishop on d3) which is only being protected by the Queen (which White wants to bring to the attack). even more importantly it connects the Rook on a8 to the a5 square (the Knight on a6 was blocking). this allows for the crucial ...Ba5 follow-up later on which is what saves the position for Black

...Ne8 is indeed the most important move for Black, but you can wait until Qg5 to play it. if you play it right away then White will simply retreat the Bishop to e3 and then he'll be easily winning with his extra pawn and superior position. 1...Ne8 totally blunts the attack but it also loses the game instantly. as my smart-ass teacher liked to say "chess is hard..."

i'm glad that OP provided a cool position for everyone to pour over but it's really not appropriate for lower-level players. it's way too murky, subtle and complicated. players need clear, thematic positions at first. i'll start posting some cool puzzles/ideas soon
