Michael Jordan

How well-known is this guy in countries other than America? What do people think of him?

nobody cared about ape hoop in the 90s but still everybody knew who mj was and that he played for the bulls and also everybody saw the space jame movie and still have the green vhs tape :3

He a good boy

Everyone knows who he is

On an episode of pointless over here, only 6/100 recognised his face....

Only got his father murdered once

Everyone was a Bulls fan here. Except my contrarian friend who rated Grant Hill above MJ.

it's a weird kind of fame honestly. I know who he is, michael jordan played for the bulls and he was the best and then he retired to play baseball and sucked and came back to basketball and was not that good anymore. also, space jam. I think like 70% of people here know all of that.
that being said, I don't know what he looks like or any special moment he had in his career or what made him good. there's a heavily memed image of this black dude on the verge of tears and someone mentioned it was michael jordan and I was like what the fuck I thought he was dead.

Compared to other European countries, basketball really isn't popular in the uk. Wonder why?

Jumpman = MJ

he makes cool shoes

He won 3 more consecutive titles after his return, beginning with his first full season. He was is and for the presumable future will remain the GOAT.

I think he's a dogshit team owner and a gambling addict and needs to fuck off

Because it’s an island full of inbred nonces who have gotten complacent after ruling the word

because they're fucking shit so they pretend it's not a global sport

He was God.

I know Bird is well known in the uk.

I think that most people here wouldn't be able to recognize him by looking at his picture, but if you mention the name Michael Jordan then most people would know that he was the Basketball GOAT due to the circlejerk.

Kids still wear his jersey.

He would have been better than mj had the pistons not ruined his career. He was lebron before lebron

Were the other dudes in space jam basketball players as well or just actors?

the annoying fat slob was an actor. the dudes that had their talents stolen by the aliens were real players.

>bill murray
>that annoying fat slob

Even the lil midget? How does he reach the hoop?

I was talking about Wayne Knight's character, Stan Podolak.

Oh. Forgot he was in it

Im the Michael Jordan of Yea Forums posters

Based shoesalesman

They were actual.aylmaos

Not really much here no cable tv and only some NBA hightlights late at night.

Before his ankle injury Hill was on his way to being at that elite level.

elmer fudd? he would just shoot the hoop down

There's a great book about this that I'm forgetting the name of, but the short answer is Michael Jordan was so globally famous, it didn't just change sports. It changed capitalism.
He was the first athlete to ever not just be an athlete, but be a brand.
He's the reason the NBA prioritizes selling shoes over championships now.
The entire world recognized him, even in obscure places that had no idea how basketball was played.
Of course it's been 25 years and I'm sure that effect has been lost on the younger generations worldwide.
But in his prime, he was arguably the most famous person in the world.

How do we be like mike

youtube.com/watch?v=b0AGiq9j_Ak

do you BTFO newfags too?

>came back to basketball and was not that good anymore
Stick to rugby, fag.

Everyone knows him here

fuck head got more whistles then anyone in the league

so what thats because nobody could stop him without hanging on for dear life.

>I don't know what he looks like or any special moment he had in his career or what made him good. there's a heavily memed image of this black dude
Zoomers and their fucking memes

if you are watching sports without gambling you are wasting your time
if you are rooting for a team without gambling you are a cuckold

if you are watching sports without gambling you are wasting your time
if you are rooting for a team without gambling you are a cuckold

GOAT apehoop player obviously, but even more of a GOAT competitor than player if that makes sense.

There were anecdotes of his pathological competitiveness which was to the degree that then-current NBA players were warned off challenging him to any type of one-on-one game even five years after he retired desu

People generally know him in China from the Bugs Bunny movie before they banned it. Now people only speak of him in hushed whispers and some question if he really existed

very but almost no one knows he was a fucking asshole and that he got btfo by based pistons

wait, why did winnie the pooh ban spacejam?

In my opinion Michael Jordan was the Michael Jordan of basketball.

hes the GOAT.
L3br6n is the apehoop equivalent of Penaldo

No Kobe is Ronaldo

Basketball is the second sport in the world after footy and he is recognized as the GOAT of basketball. Definitely the most known American sportsman and probably the most known sportsman in the world after Pele, Maradona, Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

Everybody knows him and his crippling gambling addiction.
Nowadays he is more well known for his meme draft picks

Everyone knows the name, barely anyone knows his face or anything else about him

Most people 30+ in the western world recognize his face though

this

Goat

He was a great player, not quite Larry Bird level, but very close

when I was a kid I had a bulls hat and I didn't even know or care about basketball at all

Now this is what I call based and more than likely redpilled

He's the space jam guy

Is he kinda like lebron or something? he looks gay

I know him as the star of popular 90s film space jam
have never watched him play a second of basketball though, outside of the clips in the film

I've lived in 2 3rd world countries and in both of them every one knew about and liked Jordan, even if there was never basketball on TV, and even if they didn't even have TV themselves. Everyone always wanted a Chicago Bulls hat or jersey and associated that logo with him rather than the team itself.

Growing up I always thought jordan was a gentleman and a good model for leadership. I didn’t fucking know he was the most niggerest gangster motherfucker not only in basketball but in everything he do. I mean:
>trash talking teammates and opponents to tears.
>punching players... in practice
>sore loser
>can’t take criticism
>carry the most asinine grudge for the longest time
>backstab friends
>kick you out of parties even though it’s not his house
>doesn’t care hoodlums rob, steal and kill people for his shoes
>hell he a goddamn billionaire and he don’t believe in chartity
>doesn’t believe in his own drafted players
>stubborn as hell

This guy is the stereotypical hoodrat who made it. But he is a god in the court

I have this bag due to MJ

Attached: 1553054545850.jpg (1599x1200, 246K)

if you ask the average dutch person to name a list of basketball players, him and lebron are probably the only 2 that will come up
maybe kobe as well

nobody knows who he is here.

Some random American who got a shoe named after him, just like Stan smith, chuck Taylor etc

Is there also a magic johnson (the guy who was in south park about AIDS) ? what is the difference between the two ?

you're thinking of Bill Murray

different era and Magic wasn't quite as good

Shaq is also well known.

Why are people acting like they wouldn't recognize MJ? Is it cool not to recognize him? His face was plastered all over the place in the 90s. You must be a literal zoomer who avoids all sports to not recognize him

Everyone knows who MJ is. Like even people who dont give a single fuck about basketball or sports in general

I've heard of him

I thought Chuck Taylor was a shoe designer or something to do with converses. I've never heard of Stan smith

Basketball is big in ex-yu countries and ofc everyone knows about him

Him, Shaq and LeBron are the only basketballers even people, who know nothing about basket ball, know about. So yeah he's pretty well known. Every 90s babby remembers him from Space Jam

>Everyone ITT going "he was known because space jam"

Attached: 1562179165221.gif (200x220, 1.09M)

Since apehoop is the most popular sport in Flipland everybody knows him and Da Bulls team. Imagine streetball players yelling "Jordaaaaan" in the 90s as how people yell "Kobeee" now.

Attached: FB_IMG_1563543736545.jpg (771x771, 79K)

In Spain maybe you have never seen a basket match in your life but you surely know who was/is MJ.

He was very famous in the 90s. Space Jam, commercials and all that.
Probably a literal who to zoomers

It's only 'popular' in other European countries (really only Spain, Greece and few eastern Euro countries) because they have no other sports except football.

was watching some 8 year old play basketball the other day.

before they shoot they all say
"this is micheal jordan, no, this is michael jordan" every single time.

who was the most famous athlete worldwide in the 90s, then? our media leads us to believe it was jordan but it seems that is a lie; who was the household name soccer player (or cricket player) known worldwide in the 90s? maradonna or beckham or some pajeet batsman probably.

Attached: e9d.jpg (600x600, 18K)

Everyone here knows who he is. But I just realized he is still alive, I thought he was dead for some reaon, why doesn't he appear in media?

mike tyson

Jordan easily.
Ronaldo(9) was super popular in late 90s, Tyson was well known but MJ was definitely the #1

Björn Dählie probably, also one of the greatest athletes ever. Lemieux as well

>Spain has no other sports except football

This is blatantly false

Stone Cold Steve Austin

it was jordan easily
global media was kind of a joke back then compared to now.
muhammad ali is the only thing that comes close to jordan.
there was no global soccer star in the 90s, the only guy with brand recognition was Pele

Isnt this guy the shoe maker Air Jordan?

It's pretty popular in France, it has about the same number of club players as handball and is 6th overall on that matter

yes and not even the best at that

that honor goes to Chuck Taylor

which one is a billionaire?

which one has people still wearing his shoes long after his death?

Basketball is for niggers and burgers who use it an excuse to virtue signal how much they support niggers.

Attached: 1560076063430.jpg (774x635, 109K)

how many 30 pt games did Chuck Taylor have in the NBA Finals?

Michael Jordan is unironically one of the most recognisable Americans. Name any NFL, NHL or MLB player and you will draw a blank with anyone who doesn't specifically watch those leagues but bring up Jordan and 90% of people over 15 will immediately recognise.

Do not underestimate the power of Space Jam.

>space jam

space jam was huge but global Jordan began in 92 with the Dream Team.
it was the greatest commercial of all time

everybody knows who he is

>caring about shooting 3s in the 80s and 90s

for a few years in the 90's MJ was possibly the second most famous person in the world

the most famous was the other MJ

he could walk down the street in most countries in the world without being recognised
his nike logo tho is famous in every country

doubt many people would know about him. the only people who really would are the few that watch a lot of american tv shows and would've learnt his name through pop culture references.

england has had an established sports culture for hundreds of years that includes cricket, rugby, tennis, and boxing in addition to soccer.

>6th most popular sport
pretty sure the gap between soccer and every other sport in france (even rugby and tennis) is so massive that the others are completely irrelevant by comparison.

The smallest monstar and short basketball player, was Muggsey Bogues, he couldn't dunk irl I don't think

People know him here, but younger generations might be more aware of the brand than the actual player.

People know about the Jordan-brand, but couldn't tell you who Michael Jordan is. Kinda like the New York Yankees. Everybody would recognize the logo, but people might not realize that logo is from an actual sports team that plays baseball. People might know Bjorn Borg, the brand, but might not realize Borg was also a pro tennis player back in the day. I think as we grow older, MJ will fall into that category more and more.

What also adds to that, is that MJ was an once-in-a-lifetime talent, who reached GOAT-status. And then basically right after he retired, another generational talent stepped up in LeBron James. Had that not happened, people would've named basketball synonymously with Jordan more because nobody would've filled that gap. Because another player got to that level, people might view Jordan less as that basketball guy and more as that sneaker-guy.

he claimed he could dunk but he never dunked in a game

>I'm about to go michael; take your pick: jackson, tyson, jordan... game six!

Attached: images.png (300x250, 18K)

>People might know Bjorn Borg, the brand, but might not realize Borg was also a pro tennis player back in the day.

i only know him as a tennis player, what is the brand known for?

Isn't he from the space jam and the zimzam bimbam

only thing i remember about bjorn borg was everybody making fun of him for coming out of retirement and using a wooden racquet when everybody else had switched to metal.

it was Jordan by far. dude was the closest thing to the other MJ sports had ever had.

There are some places where Jordan was the only person they knew of from America...the same places who think there are movies stars on every street corner

so India

We know him as that guy from Space Jam.

SPACE JAM

Why did Brits watch it if it's about a sport they don't follow?

Michael Jordan is a psychopathic bum. He dominated during a notoriously weak period of the NBA (post-Bird and Magic, before Kobe). His nemesis was Clyde Drexler. He faced teams full of absolute nobodies with the sole exception of the Utah Jazz (Stockton definitely got the better of him). He had to rely on an incredible supporting cast throughout his career which included Rodman, Pip, Kukoc, Grant and Kerr. He was given the benefit of the doubt on every single play he was involved in. Referees were explicitly told not to call fouls on Jordan. That is a fact. And it makes sense considering he was the face of the NBA and the most massively-marketed athlete of all time.

And I guess that's the reason we have to deal with all of these Jordan shills. Because of Space Jam and Hane's commercials and all of the other "Be like Mike" nonsense. Couple that with the racist hatred that Lebron gets for his social activism and it's no wonder we get these stupid posts. Lebron James literally built a school for poor black children while Michael Jordan was building private prisons used to cage black people. Get fucking real even trying to compare these two guys. There's a reason that Lebron is considered the GOAT on and off the court. He carried teams, often with little to no support. And he did it against elite opposition. Something that Jordan wouldn't be all that familiar with. I don't give an athlete points for going off to play baseball when things get tough.

Lebron gets fouled every time he drives towards the hoop but he's so strong and stoic in his reaction to the hits that these stupid refs miss it. It's also worth noting that Lebron is the greatest high school player of all time while Jordan was irrelevant in high school. If Lebron had played college ball then he would have surpassed Pete Maravich as the greatest college player of all time. But we'll never have that confirmation because he was so good he went straight to the NBA.

delicious pasta

Literally the best in the history of basketball, in addition to the shoe brand, is known to be the best black in basketball

MJ is overrated. He never won Euroleague.

no one knew how to move on defense in the 90s except Pippen

Everyone since basketball and NBA is popular here.

GOAT mentioned

Attached: tsJ9Dyf.jpg (1500x6258, 2.61M)

Is he that actor from Space Jam?

we can all agree that LeBron is the GOAT, right?

Space jam

Was that movie popular in Britain? But I thought brits didn't really watch basketball

There is a gap but not enough to make them irrelevant. This is from 2015
1.Football : 2M
2.Tennis : 1M
3-6 : Horse athletes, Judo/Jiu-jitsu (maybe including BJJ), Basket-ball, Handball : between 650k and 500k in that order
I think I read that Handball surpassed basketball in 2018 which makes them 6th
Rugby only has 400k left and is the sport losing the most every year

it's a warner brothers movie it was popular worldwide

At least among my friends. We only know about him because of space jam.

Just shows how GLOBAL basketball is

>How well-known is this guy in countries other than America?
He's known.

>What do people think of him?
They think that he played basketball.

For some reason I thought it was Disney even though the Looney Tunens are in it. Don't think I've seen a WB movie lately. Do they still release kid kinos?

Yes but that's because all negroes look the same. Doesn't mean that people don't know the name.

But why? I thought soccer was the only really global sport

Cool in Space Jam

Boomer detected

In Germany, Basketball is a niche sport and nothing more. It's growing and it's the most popular American sport here, but it's still far from popular. However, Michael Jordan is the only American sportsperson everyone below the age of 50 or so knows here. He's easily among the most famous Americans. Everyone here except a tiny amount of zoomers would agree he's the greatest basketball player of all time. I don't think most people here have much knowledge about him and his career, but that's not really important in this case.

Those posts implied that basketball is not a global sport though.

Space Jam

When I was a kid I used to get Michael Jordan and Micheal Jackson confused

basketball is easily a global sport, user, not fuckhuge like it is in the States but pro leagues are everywhere, and places like China it's popular enough to pay players huge salaries.

I'd say cricket, rugby, and baseball all also qualify, just for variety in places they are played, where most continents have at least one country/region that is really into those sports.

Baseball is only in north america, parts of the caribbean, and japan. Hardly global

I'll never be this level of seethe
Feels bad man

Football/Soccer is the only absolute global sport, I stand by that. Basketball is second, it's also globally relevant, but not to the same extent as football.
Cricket is only played by parts of the Commonwealth, India alone may make it look like it's a global sport, but is isn't. Similar thing with Rugby. Baseball isn't popular at all except in North America and Japan. The nations that engage in those 3 sports love it dearly though, that's a difference to, say, track and field, where almost every country participates (which would make it a global sport), but it remains rather unpopular for the audience.

you're a lot angrier than the person who wrote that. don't ask me how i know

Everyone would know who Michael Jordan is, but very few would actually have seen his game or gave a shit about his carrer.
His worldwide fame, like any other american sportsmen, is vastly overrated by americans

this, space jam was absolutely based
the monstar anthem unironically one of my favourite hip hop tracks of all time

i know who David Beckham is
his only career highlight im aware of is marrying a spice girl and doing a bunch of gay poses for advertisements
