CP3 and Harden worked well though. Plus, CP3 has an unfair reputation as a ball dominant player too, since before Harden, he was the only true playmaker on any team he's ever been on. Harden and RWB can work well together, Harden iso's lead to either double teams or the defense collapsing, where then Harden can kick it out to Russ and RWB can attack the close out. On the other side, Russ can beat his man, collapse the D, and find a shooter outside for 3. They're devastating in transition, RWB can attack the rim himself or find Harden trailing for the 3. Or Harden can just throw a lob to RWB.

I think the main concerns that people have with this combination is that they assume Houston will automatically play the same way they've always had with Harden, and not adjust for the skillset Russell brings. And even then, with the Rockets running at least 4 shooters at all time (Or 3 when RWB is on the court), RWB can thrive in the offense because teams will have to pick their poison, collapse the D and give up the 3, or hope you have good enough rim protection.

It won't be like that 100% of the time, but some possessions will have to be like that, that's just the reality of having two talented players on the court at the same time. There's only one ball after all. Plus, we haven't seen what D'Antoni does with the offense in order to accommodate RWB's skillset. And he+Harden worked well in OKC, so it doesn't make sense to assume that they can't make it work now, now that they're better players. (Well, Harden is. I actually think RWB is marginally worse as a player, just the stats look way better because he started chasing rebounds and his usage went way up. Basically, with no Harden and then no Durant, he grew into some bad habits)

Russ will carry the ball up and press the paint nearly every possession, hopefully either finishing at the rim or bringing an extra man in, enabling harden to rotate to the open spot at the arc. If that fails, they'll go with the opposite and have harden iso-meme until the defense spreads and then send it to Westbrook who hopefully has forced a favorable switch and can cut around his defender to open paint.

They got destroyed by speedy scoring guards last year (kemba, booker, etc), and I don't really see that issue being fixed here. Kanter definitely doesn't bring much to the table on defense, and Stevens' system tends to demand a fair amount from centers on that end. All that aside, it seems like ainge was mostly concerned with the effort issue and really focused hard on bringing in guys who will never have that problem.

Eh. While I agree Kyrie absolutely cannot lead his own team, it's hard to say he did not prove his worth as one of the most elite second fiddle stars on a championship team within the past 20 years. You're forgetting how many times Kyrie showed up during the most important times during the Cavs playoff runs. He was a part of some of the best offenses in NBA history being LeBron's Robin. I think people overstate how much of a problem the CBA stuff is. The only guy who I think made a decision to go to a clearly worse team because it was in a big market is Lebron last year. The reason that players were willing to go to the Nets is not just because they're in a good market; it's because they're clearly been really well run for the last several years and can offer a competitive situation in a big market. Same with the Clippers.

I don't think it's inherently a bad thing that players get to make their own decisions about where to play. It does disadvantage small-market teams, but small-market teams have plenty of ways to build competitive teams - the Nuggets and Jazz are just as good as the Lakers and Clippers.

The #1 thing that stops teams from being competitive is having owners that are dumb or cheap. And the CBA can't fix that.

you can claim that's only fair as teams can trade you along with their contracts almost anytime and anywhere, and i will listen to the argument. but as more and more star players demand trades to specific organizations with one or even two or more years left on their contract, more and more non-star players will have to be moved involuntarily too. that runs entirely counter to the credo of free player movement.

free agents are free to negotiate the terms of their next contracts. that is fine. but when you're trying to act like a free agent while under contract, you trigger major roster moves. the davis trade sent three players to new orleans and three more to washington. the paul george trade moves SGA and gallinari to OKC. neither of these eight players chose to change their teams.

of course that also happens when teams do trades of their own volition. but star players are selling these moves as emancipatory. i think that is disingenuous. it just doesn't sit well with me. for davis to change the team he plays for mid-contract, six other guys had to pack up and leave. i don't think the elite players give a fuck about that.

I agree that there's a certain kind of reporting on the sport that actively valorizes moves like the Anthony Davis move to an extent that's probably slightly unreasonable. I get where you're coming from on that.

But I don't think that it's really a novel problem in basketball, or in pro sports generally - as you point out, trades and players getting uprooted all the time. And the basic fact that some players have more leverage and other players have less is something that we generally accept as part of the fundamental structure of the sport. So I get being annoyed by it but I don't really see where it's a fundamental injustice or something that needs to be addressed in the CBA. That's what I'm not getting, I guess.

rumored among the killed are takemoto yasuhiro, nishiya futoshi, and kadowaki miku. takemoto was one of the 4-5 main directors at kyoani, most famously responsible for hyouka and the disappearance of suzumiya haruhi. but kyoani has an all hands on deck approach to tv animation direction, the directors form little units with certain animation directors and key animators and cycle through the episodes, so even on e.g. a show by ishidate you would get like 2 episodes of takemoto. takemoto was big, in any case.

nishiya and kadowaki were the two top character designers and animation directors at kyoani. they were responsible for the look of most, if not all, kyoani shows of the last several years. nishiya in particular was absolutely stellar. all of them were also teaching young animators at their in-house animation school.

obviously the loss of everybody involved is tragic, but with key creatives like them killed, in a studio environment with that much vertical and horizontal integration, kyoani will be out of commission for a long, long time. maybe forever.
