Attendance is at 29K per game this season, and that's with a lot of bad teams and rising ticket and concession prices (which owners do need to lower). The league kills it in regional ratings, with MLB teams beating their NBA counterpart in the majority of shared markets. It's the most participated youth sport in the country (including softball), the same amount of millennials and Gen Xers call themselves baseball fans as they do basketball fans, and 54% percent of Americans call themselves baseball fans (up 7 percent from just 2017) vs. 44% basketball.

Some changes do need to be made. The league should shoot for about an average 2:30 game time for 9 inning games with typical offense and tweak a few things to bring the strikeout rate down, but baseball is more than fine. It only seems "irrelevant" if you watch Skeeeeeeep and First Take, who are only concerned with the Cowboys and Lebron 90 percent of the time.

I loved baseball in the late 80s and through the 90s, then lost interest in it once pitchers started dominating. I only follow my team in passing and don't watch any complete games during the season, just a few innings until I get bored of no one getting on base. That's why I took the softball pill, typically they have way more offense and action and the games are shorter. Season is actually too short though, I guess that's only natural because it's primarily played at the collegiate level.

Also, it brings communities together. From little leage to adult softball, to going to a pro or minor league game. When you're there, you're talking to people around you. If you're supporting a team and get season tickets, or have a child playing, you're going to end up meeting and networking with people you otherwise wouldn't. It's that social side of it that keeps it strong.
Actual attendence is down a little, but the sport is played everywhere, and the MLB wants to have more USA teams playing in other countries like they did in London this year (fucking GREAT game).

Baseball is just too repetitive to watch. There are no "tactics" in baseball compared to football, basketball, hockey, and soccer, it's largely just pure athleticism and minor decision-making by outfielders. Don't get me wrong, the game is fun as hell to play and I played it for 7 years when I was younger, but it just makes for boring TV, imo. I straight up get more enjoyment from watching a tennis grand slam or a golf major, and I have never played either sport.

This is a misconception people have, if there's not some Xs and Os scheme that can be implemented, the sport lacks "tactics." More casual baseball watchers believe it's just one guy throwing to wherever as another guy swings real hard to hit the ball wherever. All hitters have tendencies and a great deal of research goes into tracking those tendencies, something that really wasn't possible before the rise of big data techniques. Same with analyzing pitcher tendencies. And the tactical battle unfolds as either player along with the catcher tries to outwit each other. And no, it's not a static affair with regard to just looking at a hitter's heat map and targeting his weak spots and getting easy outs all the time. Indeed, that is often the opening move so to speak, but hitters adjust and will scare pitcher/catcher/defense into adjustments of their own.

If you want things to look before in between balls in play, you look for things like swing path and approach (i.e. is the hitter trying to pull, trying to slap opposite way, is he just off?), pitch location and how it can determine the ensuing sequencing. A fastball painted on the outside corner is a much more effective "strike" than a taken fastball down the middle because the former is more effective in setting up secondary pitches.

There are other up and coming leagues that deserve some limelight and promotion. I wonder if the problem is that the defensive side of the game is so boring compared to other sports. Aside from a highlight reel play, I don't care. Watching a pitcher from my team--even if he's one of the best--isn't interesting even though great skill is involved. In football I can enjoy watching the defense work against the opponent as much as when the offense has the ball. When my team is fielding I'll usually start flipping the channel or do something else until the side is retired.

All it's done is open up the court and make ball movement more complex with more options. Any team that throws up 3s without any other moving parts or options is going to get beat up on by a team that has good shot selection and picks their spots.

The only complexity that I can see in baseball is when the pitcher duels hitters based on certain tendencies they have, but that pales in comparison to any sport where there are a lot of moving parts tactics-wise.

The league isn't dying. TV money is the life blood of baseball. Local TV contracts are huge. The Yankees are printing money with the YES Network.

National ratings aren't as good as before, but that's because more games are accessible. After you watch your local team play a 3 to 4 hour game, you going to stick around and watch the Royals vs Tampa Bay? Don't think so.

So, no the league isn't dying. NFL, NBA and MLB all have the best TV deals. NHL is in bigger trouble than MLB. MLS, while attendance is up, their TV Ratings are barely better than WNBA. The issue is nobody watches it on TV and even live it's still an absurd block of time for most people to chalk out. It's typically 4-5 hours and that's a lot. Telling my wife I want to spend 5 hours on something that isn't work would typically result in a "no dice" call, but right now my folks come down and I go to the park with my dad, the older boys, and my cousin's husband while my mom, my wife, and my cousin watch the younger kids. We do this like three times a season, and I get free tickets for two of those times.
