If you assume that the job of a commissioner is to be the advocate of the owners, Silver is actually doing a pretty bad job, since he's let the power of the players in the NBA get way the fuck out of control. Players are essentially doing whatever they want in the league now, at least the stars are.

Is there any precedence in American sports for an extended lockout? The most I can think of is the strike-shortened NFL seasons in the 80s and the strike-shortened NBA season in 2011. I've never heard of an American sport locking the players out for an entire season.
