It's not the number of people or the money they spend, it's the quality of athletes. I look at almost all of the players that play on the USMT and think that none of them, athletically speaking, could play in any of the other sports in the US on a high level. So they are fielding some of the worst US athletes available. Now, am I like OP and say the US would dominate? No, but I do think that the US would be a top team every World Cup.

The only way the US would get better at football is for there to be a greater interest and uptake in it. The overwhelming majority of athletes that have the natural physical and mental capacity to reach the top level will pick one sport and stick with it, the most popular sports in the US are American Football, Baseball and Basketball. So if more people took up football in the US you'd see a natural drop off in the level of performance in other sports across the board. Financial investment can only get you so far and no country can dominate all sports for this reason.

Tell that to the kids at the local soccer academy near me. Just because the entire country isnt all in on soccer, doesnt mean there isnt a strong culture of it in parts of the country. But if I wanted to build a great team from the youth level I would be at a disadvantage if I couldn't pull from the top 75% of the athletes of my country, right? I would even say it's impossible. I could take 45 guys out and train them 18 hours a day from the time they were 2 years old, but if they're shitty athletes, they are shitty athletes.

If resources were everything we wouldn't have poor South American countries still developing great talent. Those guys didn't have the latest academies or steroids etc. They played it in the streets while not having much to eat. But because it's so ingrained from a young age, that's why they're good at it.

That's not what the situation is in America though. The people who play professionally in the US and for the NT are exceptional athletes, and are as athletic as the players in e.g. the Belgian, English or Spanish teams who have their entire populations to choose from. The reason they're so much worse is because of their relatively poor technical skills and tactical awareness.

They’re not going exceptional athletes though. A guy like Jozy Altidore has physical strength, but he is serverely deficient in the other attributes that make up athleticism. Everyone has a different athletic ceiling. Athleticism isn’t measured purely by strength/speed, that’s simply one attribute. It’s also reliant on hand (or foot)/eye coordination, equilibrium control, spatial awareness, fast twitch muscle fibers, and so on. If you’re an athlete in America with an abundance of these attributes, you’re going to follow a sport that’s popular in this country.
People look at a guy like Iniesta and use him as an example of someone who’s not very athletic. Anybody who believes Iniesta isn’t athletic has a very poor understanding of physiology.
