It doesn't matter because the thing is whomever is paying them will be doing it for business purposes, if there's no return they won't bother anymore and the sport can be amateur.

They get paid a tiny fraction of the men, and they piggyback on the existing facilities. Teams hope it will get more popular and will make more revenue in the future, and they probably feel they are getting good p.r. by having a women's team.

this has only happened in the last few years though. before then women's teams were independent and practically amateur.

It's only professional in Europe thanks to people like Aulas who actively promote it, hoping it will make money someday.

I don't see how women's football can make money without attracting new supporters that weren't already existing football supporters because it's a different product and inferior, so it must be advertised and marketed similarly to professional wrestling.
What I do not understand is why anyone should care if other people prefer the women's football as their favourite sport, I don't see it as any threat.

Serious answer: In Europe the women's teams tend to be subsidized by men's sides. In the US the national team players' salaries are paid by the federation and they play in the NWSL more or less as a condition of employment. It's also notable that the Portland Thorns are profitable, and a couple of the other teams have to be pretty close.

The average salary for female club in the swedish top flight is like 1000 euro. It's definitely semi pro for the most part.
