They are not bad, they are just not as good as you would expect a world power to be in such basic sport.

I'm not sure about this one but some american fans say it's because talent it's nothing compared to money or connections, so talented young players without these are ignored.

My friend's cousin plays D1 soccer at USC. He could afford to do this because he is exceedingly wealthy (whole family is Jews). He says they routinely scrimmage against ghetto local pickup squads and get BTFO. If the people who actually cared about/were good at soccer played for the USMNT, which they can't into because they're too poor to get a foothold in the corrup, pay-to-play American soccer system, US would be on the level of like... probably Sweden or something.

Pro players are specialists, it's more likely that "elite" soccer players are kids who never even cut it at a high level in another sport of their choosing. You really don't know until you try it, the best soccer players aren't the best athletes, they're just mentally and technically gifted.

You still need to start at a very young age, and stick with it. By the time boys hit 13 years old, they're already moving to other sports. Convincing them to stick with a sport that none of their friends play is tough. USA Hockey gets kids into development programs and major junior hockey, but US Soccer doesn't do that. Hockey is far more popular in the hockey-playing parts of the US than soccer anyway, so I don't know that USSF even could scout effectively.

So elite players can't be identified, groomed, convinced to stick around, etc.
