QUITTING watching sports

inb4 I ramble

>want to give up sports cold turkey because it's as big as a fucking time dump as playing video games
>been a hardcore sports fan for 20 years
>have not missed a single Pats game in that span
>all Boston fan, so I've experienced the championship joy of all my teams
>consome sports talk tv radio//podcasts all the time, usually on in background, pure comfort food for me

Has anyone here ever considered quitting sports?

The toughest part will be no longer having a bonding interest with my father, who I watch all the games with but would no longer in this case.

My main reason is that I just feel it's become a huge fucking waste of time. If "my team" wins, it doesn't actually make my life any better. I can wear a [insert team championship shirt] the next day and no one would think "I'm" a champion. The players don't care about me, the majority of "holy shit Omg moments!!!" on a week-to-week basis are forgotten about the next year

All the time I spend listening to sports talk, watching the games, posting on forums, etc. is basically like playing World of Warcraft, there's no tangible benefit I get from it besides it distracting me at the moment

So...generla discussion about this topic go

yeah if it wasnt for gambling/dfs i wouldnt watch either, it is a waste of time but something neutral to talk to other people about
i stopped watching for a bit feeling the same way as you but if you are the type of person who like to follow something or consume news you will likely be following clown world events more closely which is extremely depressing and volatile to talk with others about

Your teams have won so much that you've become burnt out, congrats. You'll come back around years from now. I used to watch almost every game I could for every team in my city, now I really will only occasionally watch regular season football. I do try and watch as much MLB/NHL/NFL playoffs though, but following the leagues all the time and watching tons of pointless games? nah

OP here, yup I relate with all that.

I do notice though that besides online, talking to people about sports in public was annoying anyways, albeit it a talking point. Most people just want to hear their opinion validated, not actually debate. Then at that point...what a pointless topic to debate about.

No way I'll be watching the news though, I like election cycles for the lels but beyond that I"m completley disconnecting from mainstream news/sports cycle of noise

I'm very OCD, I feel like if I miss a single Pats game I'm no longer a real fan and will never return.

I've been to tons of games in person, spent HUNDREDS Of hours a year on forums discussing the pats etc etc but after they won last year it felt cool but its not like Im absolutely elated

And when the Red Sox won last year? In 2004 it was amazing ,now I really felt nothing.

this about sums it up

do what makes u happy luv xx

Athletes really do feel fans (male ones, that they can't fuck) are basically subhuman losers, unless they're celebrities

>Has anyone here ever considered quitting sports?
thinking about it, yes. i love it but it doesn't lead anywhere and uses emotional energy and time

You think too much about it

Video Games
Watching Sports
Potato Chips/Sweets/Soda
Porn

All things you should quit as they offer 0 value behind the momentary pleasure, which is SHIT tier really

Alcohol is pretty based though because it actually gets you laid and leads to great times, if used right

How old are you, OP? I've noticed that sports are getting less interesting to watch as more and more of the athletes are younger than I am. I think that once 50-60% of them are younger than you (so, probably in your late 20s), watching these children run around just feels weird.

also, you can be a sports fan without being a huge over-invested babby whose life revolves around it. i know it's probably ironic posting that on an autistic sports imageboard that many of us spend a lot of time on, but it's true

Yea Forums is 95% plastic though

Yeah, watching monotone, smug 20 somethings spitting back generic player-speak for teams/fans they dont really care about is just offputting

I basically am with NBA/MLB but the NFL I have so many "deep" connections with it, it defines Sundays in the fall for me, bonding with father, the whole ritual etc that it's going to be emotionally difficult desu (inb4 gay)

I don't watch the NFL apart from the Superb Owl because of my flag, but the most recent World Cup had players doing Fortnite dances as goal celebrations. It was then that I came to terms with the fact that this is not aimed at me.

having an interest in something or hobby doesn't mean there needs to be a tangible benefit. i would, however, argue the social aspect, whether it be with someone you already know i.e. your friends that went to a different college than you thus creating a rivalry or enjoying sports with your dad is a positive social experience. there's also the stranger aspect, say you're a raiders fan in a city halfway across the country, they usually have designated bars for teams and i've gone to bars like this by myself and have friends to this day that sports were the catalyst of how we met. pretty much stop being a faggot

i really doubt that most of us are obnoxious about our teams IRL, but who fucking knows.

to be fair tho this is my main board not because it's necessarily my biggest interest in life i just think that other boards are awful like Yea Forums Yea Forums and Yea Forums.

Until you develop a drinking problem and use it as a crutch

oh hey two of the most insufferable faggots in the world both are "FUCK SPORTSBALL" retards imagine that

This is true. I don't post on those, but /g/ is utterly abysmal too.

Could you just dial back how much auxiliary media you consume? I only follow two sports teams: the Noles and Borussia Dortmund. I watch them every weekend. It's a negligible time investment and most of the time I'm watching the games while tending bar at work. It's just entertainment to me without consuming my life. Can't you do that or are you a legit sports addict who must go cold turkey?

You should watch the football with your father if that makes him happy.
You can't ask him about it though, because he'll think you don't want to watch it anymore and he's making you do it.
I don't think it's a good idea to quit, I do think you should become a Giants fan though, because fuck the Pats

This guy knows what's up. I guess you can keep watching the Celtics though, since I wouldn't want to force being a Knicks fan on anyone else.

dude self development
