That's what it was to start with we sent out best 3 or 4 clubs to play 2 or 3 from aussie and SA plus a Pacific island.
As money, skill, and the tournament all grew so did the size of the clubs until they became so big that didn't represent the original club any more as they were bigger than that. They then became their own clubs with "silly" names that everyone knows and loves now that represent a far larger area and catchment of players than the original club.

The issue with using one of those clubs representing the same areas the super rugby teams represent is that fans of NPC sides are a lot and I mean a lot more passionate about their team, but numbers wise they wouldn't be able to fill the stadiums any better but would also stop fans of other NPC teams from the area supporting what was the SR team. Changing to one of those would be losing in every field that you are trying to "solve".

Ranfurley Shield is an older (100+ years) trophy that is won in a one-off challenge. Shield matches can be regular NPC season or pre-season. Always home matches for the holder.

As for good guys etc. the perennial rivalry is Auckland and Canterbury, traditionally the 2 strongest teams, so they're pretty much auto-baddies. Good guys is subjective, but /rug/ loves a bit of Northland, Tasman and Harbour I reckon.

They lost to Wales by a point in 1979 (the year Wales were 5 Nations champions) and drew with Ireland in 1980 and beat Munster who had 7 players in the side who had beaten the All Blacks. Leinster were the only Irish side to beat them that year.

That was when they were meant to be at their strongest and were considered to be like Argentina were considered to be back in 2005 but they also managed to beat Wales and Scotland in 88 and 91.
