Easiest way to diminish a great offensive player is to say their defense is bad and include lowlights even though every player in the league has these if you watch enough basketball. Missed rotations, uncontested shots, mismatches, etc are going to happen in 82 games with 50+ FGA where defense is conserved for the playoffs.

Conversely easiest way to overrate a shitty player is their defense (look at the people who defend Frank Ntilikina, Lonzo Ball).

It’s because defense is hard to quantify in the NBA as compared to offense. So even though Lebron finished top ten in defensive rating among SFs last year the narrative lives on he’s a washed defender because a clip exist of Kuzma pushing him into his assignment.
