It really is lame to think Kawhi carried the Raptors when he missed twenty games during the regular season and he literally had a stacked roster given to him come playoff time. Realistically, OKC's cap wasn't especially fucked. They had the cap hit of a contending team, and that's what they were supposed to be. You keep the core together because you have a chance at a title, and a few years from now, it sucks and you have to rebuild because you have tons of dead weight on their contracts.
OKC doesn't think they actually have a shot at winning a title, which is probably only half-true. It would have been interesting to see what that core would have looked like with more spacing and a different coach. But it also seems like their owners aren't willing to spend the amounts you have to spend on a contending team, and I don't think you should own an NBA team if you're not willing to do that.

Everybody should have known what Hayward's recovery time would look like. He had surgery in May, so they knew that he'd have to rehab during the season. Ideally the offseason gives him a chance to address some issues and get in form, or else it very quickly becomes more justified to cut his minutes way down. But he's on a max contract, and it was obvious that they'd need him in form for the postseason to have any chance at all.
But yeah, all of this depends on how Kemba performs in new circumstances. He's obviously got less raw talent than Kyrie and his age doesn't help his case on a long contract, but he just might be able to function with fewer touches. He'll also have an easier time playing at the faster tempo that the Celtics like, Kyrie had a tendency to slow the game down to his pace for better or worse.
Not to that say any of this is guaranteed or even likely, a lot has to go right for the celtics. Kemba might just be so used to carrying the entire load that he can't adjust, but at the very least he won't be a dick about it.
