Because it’s one of the few sports you can actually play anytime, anywhere. You feel much more connected to the game on screen when you know that you’ve been in that situation before. Besides women, I have literally never met any soccer fan that hasn’t played the sport. I’m taking either competitively or casually. There’s other reasons but this is just mine.

very few people who watch football around the world are actually sports fans. we don't watch football because we want to enjoy sports entertainment. it is the cheapest way lower class societies can pit their tribe/clan/town/city with opposing tribes/clans/towns/cities, without having a fight.
1000s of years ago, it could have been cavemen kicking around a stone to see which caveman tribe was the better tribe.

I used to watch casually and now that I'm playing fullback I notice the whole defende movement and line positioning and can focus in it while the other team is just passing the ball.
We also feel more cinnected to that sport because teams aren't franchise but clubs representing the city
