it's just really really hard to hit a baseball so that's what keeps it low scoring despite the 100+ opportunities per game

Football isn't a good game. I like it a lot, but it just isn't. Baseball is safe / out, strike / ball, objective rules, and any more esoteric rules are there to keep people from playing the game in the wrong spirit, like the infield fly rule or balks. Football is filled with subjective rules, hinging on things like what's a catch, and what's interference. Make small changes in how exactly you're allowed to hit someone, and the whole game changes. It's not nearly as sturdy as something like baseball.

How do the two compare? I know a lot about baseball but my limited knowledge of cricket comes only from a Google doodle minigame. My record in it was something like 97 runs, I think.

Baseball used to have huge arguments, with people screaming at umpires after close plays. Then they added video review, and now they just politely ask to take a look at questionable / close plays, and the umps put on headphones and some guy looks at replays of the play and tells them the correct call. Still can't argue balls and strikes; you get thrown out if you do. There's something kind of fun about the yelling, but it's also nice not to get stuck with blown calls.

Managers theoretically only get one challenge, but umpires have discretion to review anything they want, and I've never seen them refuse to look at a questionable call because the team used their challenge, unlike football, where you're just out of luck if you blow your wad.
