It's still oppressively true right now, and I say this as an lifelong soccer fan. In countries with a thriving soccer culture, virtually everyone is at least somewhat aware of the local soccer scene, and at the absolute least, knows of their local team and its standing on the national scene. However, here in the US, virtually every major city I've been to is full of people whose first response to any question about their local MLS/USL team is a genuinely surprised "We h-have a soccer team?". For someone who wants to discuss the MLS, this shit is incredibly frustrating since people would rather discuss offseason NFL and NBA shit that an active soccer season.

That itself reflects the national attitude and interest in the sport. It's why I'm telling the German above that buzzfeed, deadspin and passing mentions on ESPN do not in any measure reflect the country's feelings towards soccer. In most the of the country, they still consider it an adorable novelty sport for kids. At his most famous, Landon Donovan was still a D-list celebrity in national consciousness. Megan Rapinoe and Hope Solo are still literal whos in most places in the US.

Which is why hand-wringing about "equal pay propaganda" is silly since the country isn't emotionally invested enough in soccer (let alones the women's side) to care. They only care because it's an opportunity to flag wave.
