I'd say beach volley is a serious sport. Is one of the most played in the world, top matches are extremely competitive. You can tell the sport is good when even female matches are interesting to watch (both team and beach)

Urgay is slowly getting better at Rugby with more players being professional and playing abroad but it's doubtful it will improve much beyond the current form of being able to qualify to the WC reliably and being second in South America after Argentina which is ridiculously ahead of everyone else.

90% of the scarce manpower and resources go to football and the rest is split between every other sport. There is a limit unless the whole sport structure changes.

It'd make sense to make some sort of selection of the league's best players to make two teams. Or just make the top two qualify, while letting them reinforce with other teams' players. Most local teams in basketball, volley, handball, do this for international competitions.

It was traditionally played by a small minority of mostly wealthy people in a few neighborhoods in Montevideo.

There have been some programs and local leagues and with the media attention with Uruguay being in the WC the sport has grown but it still ia ridiculously small compared to football.

The only thing that could change this IMO is Uruguay having some sort of heroic run in the Rugby WC and that causing interest in Rugby to explode but for now there are few Rugby fielda everywhere and im fact football is so dominant that Rugbly players also probably played football at some point or still do and play both sports.

It's a small amount of people but they follow the league tons.

The most popular sport is football, the national team and derbies can easily amass 60k spectators, both big teams can easily go past 40-45k in important international matches (maybe more if they had room for them). Then you have the rest, who oscilate a lot, but on average take 500-1000 spectators a match.

On basketball we had the finals a couple weeks ago, with around 9k spectators every match. The two most popular teams (Aguada and Nacional, Peñarol will probably the same when it reaches first division) can easily move 5k spectators on playoffs. People here are really passionate about basketball for some reason, much more than Argentina and Brazil, despite our league being worse, having less teams, players, people overall. It's really amazing.

Then you get rugby. When the NT plays it's reached 7k spectators. The league doesn't have that big following but it's higher than the rest of the sports.

Another sport with remarkable attendance is futsal, probably due to it being so close with football. Although only for finals and derbies.

Uruguay has the same per capita talent than Argentina and Brazil but since the talentpool is lower every generation is a bit of a gamble and you can't have top class players in every position so Uruguay tends to oscillate in performance depending on the decades (very strong in the 70s and then shit in the 90s until the 2010s, etc).

This has been fixed a bit with the current AUF and youth system being very orderly and good so that talent is maximized. Before the AUF was a joke filled with mobsters with players doing whatever they wanted which meant talent like Recoba's or Francescoli's was wasted just by poor managment.

It's a bit frustrating since when Uruguay ahd peak strikers (the Offensive Trident of Cavani, Forlán and Suarez) our midfiled was hard-working and defensive but not very talented. Now that we have a good mid-field that could really exploit that offensive talent, Forlan is long retired and Suaez and Cavani are turning into boomers.

It's because most clubs have lots of tradition and no one would want to see Nacional or Peñarol never winning anything ever again and instead play in relegation.

When those clubs were created they could play head on with the argentinian champs and beat them more often than not in the old Aldao, Coussenier and Honor cups. After the 80s the differences started to appear, and now they aren't salvageable anymore.

The other sports just wouldn't be able to handle travel costs.
