There were a few misunderstandings of the rules. Cameroon did a few fouls, and England scored first, but at that point they were just another dirty team. Before half-time, England scored again. One player was offside, but she was not involved in the goal so the goal was given anyway and Cameroon were really, really angry. They thought it should have been offside because the other player was offside (that isn't how it works, just to be clear). At this point, they were crowding round the referee and being very aggressive. They even said they would refuse to play the next half. But luckily, this was just before half-time, so everyone got to calm down for 15 minutes.
In the second half, Cameroon scored almost immediately! Hurray! Now everyone can be friends again. But because you now have to use VAR to check every goal, it turned out the woman who scored for Cameroon was very, very slightly offside, so her goal was disallowed. This led to even greater anger and ooga-booga spear-chucking, because of course it would. At this stage, I still felt sorry for Cameroon, personally.
Then, nothing else really happened until the 90th+6 minute, when England were 3-0 up and the ball just rolled out at the side for a throw-in. England's brave Steph Houghton and a Cameroonian player were both running for it, and the Cameroon player stamped on Are Steph's leg, like she was trying to break it. This led to a bit more of a fight, and I didn't feel sorry for them this time. Filthy African monkey thugs.

VAR corrected some decisions for a ref too scared to pull cards out. Football fans begrudgingly accept that England were the good guys this time, parts of Twitter turn it into a race thing and defend Cameroon playing dirty.
Long version:

most of the time as is par for the course with our media the truth is mentioned in passing towards the middle/end(it's called burying the lead) but the vast majority of people aren't going to get to this part because the average person just wants news to get emotionally outraged about or don't care enough to investigate
