It's another rainy day in Grenoble, which might actually suit the German team. However, thunderstorms are a possibility as well for today and between the lovely mountains of this city, I can already hear muffled thunder in the distance.

Do you think we will play in a 4-4-2 with Bühl and Popp?
Finally they can break the women's transfer fee record.

Don't know.
Chase Phillips
Trying to google but cant find anything. I'm guessing it's not much though >In 2018 clubs spent only $564,354 on a total of 696 transfers. >619 of the 696 transfers were made out of contract, resulting in no fee being exchanged between clubs. >266 of the transfers made out of contract were players moving from an amateur club to a professional one
Lincoln Harris
We are still at the beginning.
Samuel Sullivan
Looking at the 2018 report, it doesn't state the record but 97% of transfers had no fee involved, 2% were for under $25k and 1% over $25k.
So I'd guess the record can't be any more than $100k.

Bild: "That's why we now are going very far." The German newspaper is highly confident about their nation's chances. They go on to say: "All top favourites - USA, France, Norway, Australia, England and Brazil - are in the other half of the bracket and will eliminate each other en route to the final. So girls, now everything is possible!"

Nigeria have competed in every Women's World Cup so far, but they've only won one of their 12 games against European opposition. That was a 2-0 victory against Denmark in 1999 on their way to the knockout rounds, the only time they've qualified from the groups before this tournament.

"The danger for Germany is right there: Nigeria has nothing to lose, for them this game is just fun. They already felt like they were knocked out and will relish that game. It will be a tough nut for the German team", says former Germany striker Inka Grings on T-Online.de. "The German team must not hold on to the ball for too long. Nevertheless, they have to be patient and clever in build-up - then they will find some gaps."

Germany and Nigeria have played a combined 67 Women's World Cup matches between them - and they've only ever played out one goalless draw. That came in the Europeans' victorious 2007 campaign, when they were held 0-0 by England during the group stages.
I remember watching women’s football being a kid and an active player, my first memory being Brandi Chastain celebrating in her sports bra and the following argument whether a woman should be allowed to take her top off in celebration. Mia Hamm was this sort of deity and the Brazilians had quirky names like Sissi and Fanta. I would always tune in every now and then and the sport would gain popularity during Germany’s golden years in the early 2000s, Nadine Angerer went a whole tournament without conceding a goal, I mean who does that in the modern days. Then in 2011 we finally got to host it ourselves and everyone involved was motivated trying to make it as magical as the men’s World Cup five years earlier. The stadiums were somewhat filled due to clever venue selection and Germany made it through the group alright. The hype abruptly died with an anticlimactic extra time loss to Japan in the quarterfinal, the potential female football hotbed of Germany couldn’t be arsed anymore. Admittedly, the 2011 WWC Final is still the greatest women’s football game to this day. Eight years after these events I still don’t see any technical nor physical progress made by the female players, goalkeepers still look silly diving for balls with their non existent reaction times and zero reflexes, lowlight reels of defensive errors can be seen all over Twitter. A six foot one defender is almost an automatic cheat code for headed goals and players still fail to clear the near post on corners and crosses more often than not. They’ve expanded the tournament to include more nations but some of these teams look overwhelmed, having no business at this stage of the event. Old and over the hill players are still part of even the elite teams and get considerable amounts of playing time, where is the young talent? It’s a sad game with a sad outlook, I doubt it will be better in eight years time.
Why are the Afghans openers so fat? I thought they were starving.
Colton Stewart
OK, assuming you actually typed all that out, why do you care about the women's game at all if it's so shit?
If you do care, don't you see the developments in the game or are you still thinking about it in terms of the men's game? Women's goalkeeping will never be as good as the men's. The game's tactics will simply have to develop around that. Go back and actually watch footage from back then and you can see how even the top teams back then were demonstrably worse in terms of fitness, skill and tactics.
Remember, the women's game is really only about 30 years old. It's developing surprisingly quickly.
It’s just tiresome to see no big leaps made in a span of a football generation, yes it’s a young sport but improvements should be immediately noticeable. Like I said I think they blew their chance here to really improve the youth development in the years since the tournament.
>Nigeria vs Germany Every 14 y/o potential school shooter's wet dream has come to life
Levi Rodriguez
How do you see no improvements, though?
I'm not sure what exactly you're looking for? Do you expect the players to have the physiques of the men or something? Improvements in fitness will be the among the slowest to arrive since only the American and English leagues are fully professional at the moment. A part-time player cannot focus on her fitness as much when she also has another job.
Jackson Rivera
Which African team is going to win today?

I guess this statement can be boiled down to two questions. Why is women's fooball still much worse in terms of playing compared to men's football? And why has there been no substantial improve during the last the last years?
First: you have to see that women are indeed less physical than men. And in all honesty, 99% of women who practise sports know that. The >muh stronk KWEEN btfoing sexist pigs, is only a fat tumblrina's wet dream. Men are on average taller, stronger. They shoot harder, run faster etc. This won't change in the future unless crazy cunts start messing with genetics or extreme hormone treatment.
Second: The reason why women don't improve significally anymore is because there is less professionalism in women's sport. Most of them don't rely on their athletic skills as an source of income. Hence they don't have the chance to spend such amount of their spare time for sport. Personally, when you look how men's football is dominated by a bunch of Ngubus and videogaymes playing menchildren, I don't think this is a bad thing that women need to get an education. So people should be careful what they're wishing for because if the professionalism and wages rise, women's football will be also dominated by grown retards and highschool dropouts.
What are caps? They keeps mentioning them, but don't explain what they are.

>I guess this statement can be boiled down to two questions. Why is women's fooball still much worse in terms of playing compared to men's football? And why has there been no substantial improve during the last the last years?
Your two questions are inane.
1. Women's football is worse because it's got 30 years of development, not 100+. It's not even totally professionalized yet. Plus, you're measuring it to a standard they'll never meet since they will never be men. 2. Your second question is based on a false premise since there's been tremendous improvement in even just the last World Cup cycle. If you want to deny it, that's fine, but then you'll be arguing in bad faith.
Caps are the number of appearances a player has made for the national team.
This fucking guy just said Spain was better than USA. Is he high?
Ayden Anderson
No, it is (or was) a physical cap that is given out. Nowadays it's usually in the form of a certificate but some teams like England will actually give a player a commemorative cap for each appearance.
It's based on a very old tradition before common team uniforms were a thing so players on a team all wore matching hats.
Tyler Butler
No they used to get given hats each time
Carter Jones
How are you not just telling that guy to have sex? I'm in awe of your self-restraint.
In my honest opinion, there will be at least another five to ten years before we see really good female football players. You're only going to get good at football if you start at a very young age, which most boys do, but not many girls. Those who did quickly gave up or just kept doing it as a hobby when they reached school age, because there was no future in it. Of course there have been exceptions, but you get my point. Nowadays things are changing, with womens' role in Western society no longer confined to the kitchen, and women's soccer gaining popularity and publicity. That's why you have players like Ada Hegerberg who grew up in the sticks, where there was nothing to do but kick a ball around, and growing up at the same time as women's football really started to kick off. Naturally she became really good.
Assuming this development, where girls not only started playing football at a young age, but also grew up knowing they could pursue a carreer as a football player, started about 10 years ago, the female football players of the future are only little kids still. In five years they will be noticed by the larger clubs, and in ten years they'll play on the national team. You can add another 20 to 500 years for more conservative countries, this is why teams such as Thailand have sucked so badly in this WC. In South Korea for example, they have some 500 women playing football at a professional level, out of a population of 51 million. That's where every country was a few decades ago, so you only got the really dedicated ones like Marta and Mia Hamm, and later Ada Hegerberg et al. Considering this, the sport has developed amazingly quickly. I think the Women's European Championships in ten years will be on par with the men's, honestly.
MVT needs to retire. She looks terrible and couldn't even be bothered to show up in uniform for her team photo.
Luis Thomas

This. Honestly, I think this is the reason that this year will probably be the last for utter US dominance. As more countries get into it the weaknesses of the American system will make themselves felt. (Primarily that soccer is a sport for rich kids here)
