As soon as their local team starts losing, most Americans will switch support to a more popular 'brand', even if they play thousands of miles away. Unlike other countries, 99% of their sports teams are artificially implanted 'franchises' as opposed to community organisations that grew organically and have strong ties to the area. That's why there's little protest when they're uprooted and 'relocated', which would be a scandal in a non-plastic country.

It obviously isn't going to work and is both a stunt to try to get a stadium deal hammered out or to justify relocation. It's not actually that different from how Tampa-St. Pete got a ballpark in the first place. The Trop was built to threaten existing markets with relocation and then MLB came back some years later with an expansion team as pay back.
