That said, the next games matter to the USA picture, right? From what I'm seeing, the winner of China vs Spain wins the right to lose to America in the knockout round. In that case, I'm going for China, underdog or not. USA vs China sounds way better bait than USA vs Spain.

Not necessarily. All they need to do is beat Thailand by a lot, which doesn't sound too hard. Then as long as two other third place teams do worse, they're through. The only group where it's almost impossible to see Chile overcoming is group C.

Chile doesn't even have to have a better GD if it's the last two, but since it's Thailand they'll still probably get a large boost anyways. Sure, maybe not all 4 of those things happen, but there's still enough room there to not count them out yet.
