discharge perfected punk by identifying, amplifying and elevating the genre's key elements decades before others would even comprehend the magnitude of their accomplishment, much less replicate it. for this reason, this is high art, not merely another album
Discharge perfected punk by identifying...
not this shit again
claiming something to be high art requires a much higher standard than success in the genre which it operates under. go jack off somewhere else or come back worth listening to.
Discharge not only spawned/heavily influenced multiple punk genres (d-beat, crust, hardcore punk, street punk, Japanese hardcore, power violence, grind) but also had a huge influence on metal, being cited as a favorite by both Slayer and Metallica among many other hugely influential lesser known bands
> Decibel magazine states that there are "...few bands who have had more influence over so many different scenes than Discharge", including the first generation of thrash bands, grind and hardcore groups
> "Discharge's influence on heavy metal is incalculable and metal superstars such as Metallica, Anthrax and Sepultura have covered Discharge's songs in tribute."[
The art aesthetic and artistic approach are also undeniably influential. Discharge as a whole created a coherent aesthetic and PHILOSOPHY of art
>this is high art
no thank you that sounds gay, but discharge does kick ass
Eh, I could go with this, and Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing is a fantastic album. But I think you might be overblowing things a bit.
What Discharge were doing was actually very, very simple. They were taking the intense, ranting political idealism of Crass, and combining it with a thick, noisy, heavy sound. That simple combination is what was so influential on hardcore punk and extreme metal.
Honestly though, I'm more comfortable giving the credit to that album, rather than the band, reason being Discharge never came close to doing anything nearly as good. Why sounds more like a mediocre metal album, and Grave New World is obviously a joke. IMO, even though neither of them ever did an album as good as Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing, as bands in general I'd take His Hero is Gone and Napalm Death over Discharge any day.
I might compare Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing to Psychocandy - both albums completely reshaped underground rock music in their image, but neither Discharge nor JAMC can ever get out from under the shadow of the achievement of those albums.
Intelligent response concealing pure blasphemy. CRASS is an entirely different beast from discharge. CRASS was a mutation of hippie beatnik protest music, their work is formidable but antiquated compared to the absolutely cutting edge avant garde sound of Discharge. Crass was a mess of ideas and approaches, where discharge was a laser focused, monumental statement of apocalyptic horror, cutting through the bullshit of not only their musical genre but human language itself. A single CRASS diatribe contains more words than the entirety of this album without even a fraction of the emotional resonance of a line as simple as "the nightmare continues..."
HHIG is a strange band to prefer, seeing as most of their songs are a puddle of trendy crust sounds with almost zero musical or lyrical hooks. They redeemed themselves as tragedy when they moved towards Discharge type lyrics and riffs, but still cannot hold a candle to their forebears.
Napalm Death? Scum was special but coming long after Discharge makes it significantly less interesting, and the songs are barely enjoyable if we're being frank. The rest of their output is good death metal, but not nearly as important or creative as discharge
I think you're overlooking the connections between all these bands. Aesthetically I think Discharge owed a lot to the Crass aesthetic - it was stark, violent, and intense in a way that the colorful London scene and the artsy, romantic New York ones didn't even hint at. You're definitely right that Crass had their roots in a hippie-ish mentality, but where they went with the political messaging was much more brutal than that might lead one to believe. And while Discharge might be the best band to work within that aesthetic, they certainly weren't the only band - Conflict, Flux of Pink Indians, and The Ex all worked wit that aesthetic as well, and I'd even say it influenced bands like GISM.
Napalm Death and HHIG owe a lot to Discharge, which is why I brought them up. Again, I don't think they did anything as good as HNSNSN, but I think they took their Discharge-influenced styles in interesting directions. I actually think Napalm Death's best stuff is when they got more into death metal and deathgrind. I also think you should spend more time listening to HHIG - I find their music very powerful. Maybe they don't have catchy hooks, but their appeal is in how dynamic they are - they have one of the best drummers in the history of punk IMO, so they're really about being thrown around in their heavy, crushing sound.
low art > high art
This band/album gives Discharge, and Hear, See, Say Nothing noogies!
I respect your level of knowledge but I cannot give credence to your claims. Discharge hear nothing is a wholely original and unique work of art that transcends all that came before and after this monumental creation.
The album art belies your claims. The cover of hear nothing is not only beautiful but a perfect reflection of the sonic and themselves textures of the music itself

Listen to Cacophony, it's a great record. Leaves Death Church totally behind.
