Ary da Silva Graça Filho, the president of International Volleyball Federation didn't allow us to participate in a higher division because our market was too small. Meaning he knew he wouldn't get much shekels from selling tv rights to us. Instead nations that we beat like Australia, Germany, China, Japan and Korea all got a "wild Card" to participate in the "newly" formed nations league. Because of that Volleyball declined because nobody wanted anything to do with international volleyball anymore. Even now he have players in the best clubs all over the world but some refuse to play for us saying what's the point. Even if we win we won't be allowed to go to a higher division.

Not only that but this affects Olympics quilifiers which will be a lot harder for us because we are not playing in the highest division of volleyball.

Yeah we experienced that in basketball last year when we failed to qualify to the world cup because we had to play half amateurs from our league.

You can blame the NBA and EL for refusing to free the players, but the main blame comes from your league/federation for letting the state of your national basketball structure to rot to such a state.

France lost 2 games overall (including one that didn't matter at the very end) despite litterally missing more than 2 full teams of NBA/EL players (basically missing the 24 best players of the country). Same for Spain, Germany, Greece or Lithuania. The common point here is that all those countries actually have decently structured leagues, even a country like Lithuania that is a very small market with a very small population. Something the ex-Yu countries don't have, as they left their leagues to rot to oblivion. FFS, Greece even had to gift a free game to their Serbian friends to help them qualify.
Croatia or Slovenia may be right to whine about not being able to pick their best players, but they are the main ones to blame for their current ordeal. FFS, the best (and pretty much only) Croatian club, Cedevita Zagreb, started the Eurocup with only 4 Croatian players.

You can't compare Lithuania to Slovenia. Lithuania is a basketball country while Slovenia is not. We only have like 8-10 "professional" clubs and half of them operate at the semi pro level. The problem isn't structure but quality. We produce only one competent player per year. The rest of them are just average at best. Hell the team that won the Euros was filled with bellow average players but we were carried by two superstars and two Euroleague players.

I take it you haven't heard the news yet. Cedevita and Olimpija were merged by their owner. Olimpija is now known as Cedevita Olimpija while Cedevita Zagreb is their feeder club. We will see what that will bring.

I love voleyball. been playing it all my life. however. it's the most fun game to play but it's shit to watch. live games are tolerable. but on tv is too repetitive.
