You have to have your openings down perfectly with White and Black these days. Even the kids and the terribads are booked up now.
Black is still OK.

Chess is not a sport
There is a board dedicated to table-top games in Yea Forums

>just attack lol
>it actually works the fucking madman

All those guys, including Tal, knew their openings inside and out. Since children they were trained in classical chess in the very strict Soviet chess schools. They had a much more comprehensive knowledge of theory and openings than today's guys do. Today's guys know the latest computer lines, but get destroyed as soon as you introduce a novelty like Vishy did to Carlsen in that game he won last WCC. Just because all the famous Tal games feature wild tactics, doesn't mean Tal didn't know his openings and didn't know defense, he won hundreds of quiet games that never make it to youtube.

oh boy here we go
>All those guys, including Tal, knew their openings inside and out.

>Just because all the famous Tal games feature wild tactics
>doesn't mean Tal didn't know his openings and didn't know defense
>he won hundreds of quiet games that never make it to youtube
duh duh and duh. it didn't take much to get you to try and drop knowledge... what was it?
>They had a much more comprehensive knowledge of theory and openings than today's guys do
you could not be more wrong. opening theory has progressed tremendously, the openings are much more "mapped out" today. that is objectively reflected in the games themselves. you'll find players as strong as fischer, tal, spassky and petrosian making extremely basic opening mistakes that 2000 FIDE players know not to do. and it of course simply because we have the advantage of very convenient, very complete opening books. the opening books i have access to are, i don't know, 100x more complete than the ones bobby and the russians had? and yes, that engine can come up with some incredible TNs which are obviously relevant to opening theory

>Today's guys know the latest computer lines, but get destroyed as soon as you introduce a novelty like Vishy did to Carlsen in that game he won last WCC
it sounds so easy; i guess that's why carlsen has handled vishy like a child these past few years. you're giving me very low-level memes from the chess world. and you're making a bizarre distinction between "computer lines" and reading Ĺ ahovski informator. carlsen is more booked up than any of the past legends, however you want to look at it

if you were even 1500 USCF i would be surprised

Got a mate who's trying to become GM, he's currently at 2400, what can I say to him that will make me sound smart?

Not a sport, bye.

why arechess girls always so cute?

do you really need to ask?

so that women would be interested in playing it too

And it's not completely divided by gender There's an open league for both men and women, and then a women's league

Chess is a sport. It's even recognised by the olympics:

*blocks your path*

>I got to 1700 on lichess by playing the meme 1. Nf3 and going into KIA or QGD
I also got to 1700 by starting out at 1500 and playing just two games against other beginners who were very bad, while I'm just regularly bad and would probably end up around 1000 if I played regularly.

What's your rating?
Watch some beginner videos, study some basic lines of popular openings, and practice tactics on chesstempo or lichess.
It's really not hard to jump from u1000 to 1500.

Normal difficulty is not meant for beginners. Start at the bottom (very easy) and work your way up.

Don't rush moves either.

1700 blitz on lichess, so probably like 1200 ELO

Play against real people retard and then look at the analysis to learn from your mistakes
