it's true, coaches have to take mandatory timeouts, that's why you often see a situation where they take one when the opponent is on a shitty 2-baskets 5-0 run even if they don't really need it at this point, because as they would be forced by the rules to take one anyway, they can as much use them to try to cut eve, the smallest momentum the opponent has
that's why you basically never see more than 5 minutes of consecutive play in NBA, there's always a team that take a timeout with 7 minutes remaining in a quarter

you should also note that those timeouts are suppoed to last for 1 minutes, but they in fact go on for 3 or 4 minutes
